Brahmavar, Dec 5: Bhoja Poojary from Giliyar near Kota in the taluk has built the traditional 'Thiri' to store paddy in an effort to carry on the legacy to the next generation.

Bhoja Poojary lives at the border of Saligrama and Kota gram panchayats. Along with other business, he also undertakes agriculture. During the rainy season, he raises paddy, and thereafter forays into the cultivation of black gram and watermelon.

Now, a paddy granary built of ropes and sheaves of hay holding about 50 quintals of paddy stands in his courtyard.

In the past, it was normal for the people to build 'Thiri' in their courtyard to store paddy. The sheaves of dry hay are built in a round shape, duly secured by the ropes made by twisting the strands of hay running around the outer side of the granaries. 'Thiri' was built because of the shortage of space inside homes and also because of the problem of pests. The paddy stored in 'Thiri' remains as it is without undergoing any changes. Now, because of the harvester machines, the paddy is directly delivered to the courtyards as a result of which most of these 'Thiri' have vanished.

Bhoja Poojary says that paddy stored in rooms or bags gets spoiled and pests also eat them. The paddy stored in 'Thiri' stays protected from pests and retains its original quality for long, he points out.
