Delegation of MLAs from Dakshina Kannada urge CM to name Mangaluru airport after Koti-Chennayya

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (DV)

Bengaluru, Dec 10: A delegation of Members of Legislative Assembly on Thursday, December 10 met chief minister BS Yediyurappa urging him to name Mangaluru International Airport after the legendary twin heroes of Tulunadu, Koti and Chennayya.

The delegation led by district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, including MLAs of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi met the CM and submitted a memorandum. Karakala constituency MLA and chief whip Sunil Kumar, Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik, Mulki-Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, Mangaluru North MLA Y Bharath Shetty, Mangaluru South MLA Vedvyas Kamath, Beltangady MLA Harish Poonja were part of the delegation. The renaming of the airport is constantly being debated upon ever since it was taken over by the Adani Group.

A bunch of like-minded organisations had even raised objections over the highlighting of the name ‘Adani Airports’ at the entrance and exit points of Mangaluru International Airport and claimed this change was causing confusion among the public.

Meanwhile, opposing the privatisation along with the renaming of the airport, district Youth Congress and Mulki-Moodbidiri Block Congress had held a torchlight protest rally from Circuit House to Bajpe airport on November 18. The Opposition party had demanded that the airport be named after Koti and Chennayya or after any of the achievers from Tulunadu replacing Adani airport.

Great photoshoot. When Vijaya Bank was handed over to Bank of Baroda where were these so called desh premis or sons of tulunadu?

They did not have guts to raise their voice as Vijaya Bank was killed by their leader Modi.

They came only to rename one road in the name of it's founder which was not supposed to.

Now they are coming up with naming Mangalure Airport after Koti Chennayya. I wonder whether these people know the contribution of Koti Chennayya as few days back BJP's Harikrishna gave controversial comments about Koti Chennayya's birth place.

Great going....You just name and rename. Any one bothered about quality of service or upgradation of airport to internataional level??? Our great MP's missing as one is busy in providing sand load at Rs. 2000.00 and other one busy in creating communal disharmony.

Really... Is it a big achievement.... There is a lot of problems in Mangalore itself try to solve it....

Recent lab reports saying the drinking water is not safe to drink.

Sand issue, drainage issue, roads issue, COVID-19 prevention, unemployment... List goes on...

We did not elected you people to change the names. Instead of changing names build new institutions or industries and name those to whoever you want. My saying is simple do some development..... think out of box... Your duty is to do develop your constituency not changing names.

This controversy has arisen, and names of local heroes suggested by proponents, because MIA will be renamed after its purchaser Adani. What business - or right - has a state CM to name an international airport that was not built by that state but by the Centre and is operated and is under the jurisdiction not of the state but of the Centre. These MLAs should take their case to the Central Government. May be the PM will listen or show the boot.

This sounds like joke. When the TOP leader, Karnataka State BJP president is from Mangalore, why all the way travel to CM. The airport is central subject and the MP plus state president is from Kudla. Why you let the baklavas to protest for this. Do you mean to say these are congress voters who came to protest?.

Mangaluru itself is Tulunadu/ Kannada name. The MP/MLA seriously need tolook on to how to expand the runway? How to improve access to the airport? How to improve tourism? Above is important than changing the name. Once above done give any name which is good for Tulunadu. The safety of passengers and pilots is important than the name.

S Shetty, Tulunaad let it be present names only. What problem is there with present names? Instead of changing names our representatives should concentrate on improving infrastructure creating more and more employment opportunities in the city. Every year many youngsters are leaving mangalore and migrating to other bigger cities for better job opportunities. See other cities how it is developing and our city is still lagging behind in terms of development as we are still thinking about keeping new names, changing names and moreover still busy reading history books.
