Mangalore: `High Growth in Container Traffic'

Mangalore, May 28: The New Mangalore Port hopes that there will be an enormous increase in the container handling owing to increased movement of cargo from different parts of the State this year.

S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager at NMPT, said in a press release here that the beginning of the current fiscal had witnessed a high growth in container traffic. As on May 26, the port handled a record container traffic of 7,659 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as against 2,180 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of last fiscal, amounting to a whopping 251 per cent jump. The release quoted NMPT Chairman P. Tamilvanan attributing this growth to infrastructure additions made at the port.
