Mangaluru, Dec 15: Police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikas launched anti-drug drive as part of crime prevention month 2020 here at the commissioner’s office on Tuesday December 15.

Addressing the gathering, police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikas said, “Anti-drug drive is very important from public and crime control perspective. Forensic expert Dr Mahabalesh Shetty and his team with two doctors helped us in gathering a lot of information regarding the case of rape and murder of elderly women three months ago. Their effort made our work easier.

“Recently, we conducted a rowdy parade. Those involved in drug activity were given opportunity to reform. They can lead normal life by reform methods. Crime can be related to use of drugs. But there lot more crime takes place with the influence of drugs. We are giving them the opportunity to reform, rectify and come back to normal life. If not, they will be dealt seriously with all possible laws,” he said.

Dr Mahabalesh Shetty, HOD, forensic and toxicology, Derlakatte said, “There is no country without drug menace. The reason for the same is money which is $ 900 to 950 billion. Our population consists 40 crore youth. Alcohol and tobacco is also a type of drugs. It is legal, while the rest is illegal. Alcohol and tobacco are the gateway to drugs which needs to be controlled. Many bar owners are the actual drug peddlers. India has urged UN to legalise ganja. Once ganja becomes legal, all the bars will be shut down.

“I also urge the police to implement COTPA Act effectively and conduct a drive. At least we can control few from drug menace and stop going further into the menace,” he said.

President of ISKCON Mangaluru Kaarunya Sagar Das also spoke on the occasion.

DCP crime and traffic Vinay A Goankar welcomed the gathering and DCP law and order Hariram Shankar rendered the vote of thanks.
