Mangalore: Political Interference – Bajpe SI Transferred Again

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 28: Pramod Kumar, sub-inspector of Bajpe police station near here, who had hogged the limelight during the gram panchayat election held earlier this month, after the Congress Party protested against the department’s move in asking him to proceed on leave, has been transferred.

He has been transferred to the district special branch of the police in the city.

Before being shifted to Bajpe, Pramod was working in Panambur police station, where some quarters had not liked his way of functioning. After he was transferred to Bajpe, he took some stern steps, which apparently hurt the interests of some political leaders. He was asked to go on leave for a few days, during which period, the Congressmen led by Ivan D’Souza, had staged a protest, demanding his reinstatement.

Although it was said that he was to report at the district special branch upon expiry of leave, unexpectedly, he reported back at Bajpe station. Now, all of a sudden, he has been transferred to the district special branch. It is said that political pulls and pressures have been responsible for his frequent transfers.

Political interference has resulted in the changed profile of criminals and the criminalization of politics.
The draconian Police Act 1861, primarily designed to perpetuate imperialist tyranny after the 1857 mutiny, should be repealed to curb political interference.
The duties of the Police force should also be streamlined.
In 1919, The International Labor Organization (I.L.O), Geneva, stipulated a maximum eight hour duty norm for all workers. Duty spells beyond eight hours entitle the worker to earn overtime. In addition, the concerned worker should also be given a weekly compensatory rest (C.R).
Violation of these norms is a blatant breach of basic, natural justice.
India, being a member, has an obligation to institute its own laws that conform to the ILO norms for all workers, including cops.
Citizen awareness and activism is important to allow free and fearless functioning of the Police Force.
