Mangaluru, Dec 19: After the protest against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent, two had died in police firing. Saturday December 19 happens to be the first anniversary of the event. The report of the magisterial inquiry conducted into the incident has reached the government. Even the first phase of the investigation report prepared by the criminal investigation department (CID) has been filed in the court.

In spite of the prevalence of restrictions under section 144 in the city, activists of an organization had planned flash protest near the State Bank. They protesters were asked to go away, but they had remained adamant. The police caned the crowd after which stones and glass pieces were hurled at the policemen. The disturbances spread to Bunder area. Thousands of people gathered at Azizuddin Road and Beebi Alabi Road and pelted stones. Bunder station was stoned and attempt to lay siege to the station had been made. The police fired several rounds in the air. As the police increasingly came under attack, they fired in self-defence in which Abdul Jaleel from Kandak and Nausheen from Kudroli had died. The leaders of Muslim organizations who had visited the place to strike truce between the policemen and protesters had also suffered injuries.

The government had ordered CID probe and magisterial inquiry. CID superintendent of police, Rahul Shahapur, led a team that visited the places which witnessed disturbances. After detailed investigation, the report was submitted in the court.

Udupi district deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, who was appointed as inquiry officer for the magisterial inquiry, submitted a report running into 2,500 pages to the government in November.

Both the reports have given details leading to firing and other things, and contents have been kept a secret. Out of 32 the police had arrested relating to 24 cases registered in different stations, most have been granted bail. Disbursement of compensation to bereaved families has been withheld as case has been registered against the deceased.

Deputy commissioner of police, traffic and crime, Vinay Gaonkar, said that remaining portion of the CID report into the Mangaluru violence is yet to be submitted.
