Congress leader C M Ibrahim hails cow slaughter ban, urges Muslims to shun beef

Hubballi, Dec 20 (IANS): Even as the Karnataka Congress is strongly opposing the proposed Bill to ban cow slaughter across the state, senior Congress leader, C.M. Ibrahim on Saturday welcomed the ruling BJP's decision to ban cow slaughter in the state.

Ibrahim's statement has come at a time when Leader of Oppostion Siddaramaiah has launched a series of attacks on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government over its decision to implement cow slaughter ban in the state.

Speaking to reporters here, Ibrahim appealed to Muslims to shun eating beef and strongly demanded that the ruling BJP must set up 'Goushalas' (cow shelters) at panchayat level instead of its proposed plan to set up at taluka level.

"As a Muslim, I strongly feel that our community should not indulge in any activity that hurts the religious sentiments of Hindu majority in the country. Muslim community must realise it and shun eating beef," he said in response to a question.

Ibrahim who is on a statewide tour to meet his friends and supporters before taking a final call to quit Congress and join Janata Dal(S).

Ibrahim expressed that he was "ill-treated" and "ignored" by the party and his friend and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Although last week, Karnataka Congress Committee president, D.K. Shivakumar met Ibrahim at the latter's residence to dissuade him from quitting Congress.

But Ibrahim very next day met JD(S) supremo, H.D. Deve Gowda and his son, H.D. Kumarswamy at their house and sent a strong signal that he is 'ready' to quit.

Soon after this incident, Siddaramaiah obliquely maintained in Mysuru that none are indispensable for the party. "People and 'leaders' need Congress to survive. Congress has survived and seen many desertions in the past," he said but did not mention anyone's name in his response to a question.

This is a the feedback I have about beef:
    (a) Best meat in West, and East Asia cuisine. These cuisine are low on spices and whence the taste.
    (b) Indian cuisine and its method is incompatible with what beef in the form of its taste has to offer.
    (c) Beef eating practice came to India along with Uzbhek invaders.
    (d) The feedback list is incomplete, but there are collective narrative against beef as a political tool.

However, the reason cow slaughter is a political issue is purely because,
    (a) It is seen as sign of oppression of majority population at the hands of invaders with roots in the past.
    (b) Cows are stolen for meat, rather than a dedicated growth for this purpose.
    (c) Used as a show of strength by certain community to teach a lesson to the other.

Regardless of the above, liberty to exercise the right for food should not be curtailed in the form of any legislation. If it is a policing problem, then strengthening legislation against theft should be strengthened including proper audit of the livestock.

it seems Ibrahim is riding 2 boats same time ie. congress + JDS. If he has so much bhakti in Cow, why dont he urgent Govt to declare cow as national animal. I am sure that many HIndus consume beef especially in Goa, Bengal, Kerala, sikkim, arunachal, meghalaya, Pondicherry, Temil nanu etc. Govt is playing girmic only. It has closed its eyes on slaughtering of hundreds of animals in a day in beef export factories in Gujrat owned by Brahmins. No action is being taken on them. May be Amit shah has share in few of them. Beef is sacred to them if consumed in india but not sacred if they export to other countries. This is call hypocracy.

    STRANGE ISN'T IT!
ALL LIVING BEINGS EVOLVE TO SURVIVE
    READ THE FOLLOWING NEWS ITEM:

If you have not read about eating habits of cows beyond your school-grade textbooks, you are likely to have an impression that they are purely herbivores. But a more careful observer would add an adverb largely to define eating habits of cows.

    Cows are meat-eaters too.

A herd of 76 rescued cows in Goa proves that cows, like humans, change their eating habits according to availability of food. This kind of adaptability has been the essence of survival and evolution.

These cows were stray animals and were picked up for rehabilitation from Calangute, a popular tourist location in Goa. Goa minister Michael Lobo said due to easy availability of non-vegetarian food mostly leftovers from a high concentration of restaurants such as chicken scraps, stale fried fish and other animal meat, these stray cows picked up new eating habits.

When they were placed under a recognised cowshed in Goa, they refused to eat normal diet given to other cows. Later, the managers of the cowshed found the cows were meat lovers.

A shocked Goa government roped in experts to make the cows vegetarian once again.

    The meat-lover cows of Bengal

However, this is not the first instance of cows turning non-vegetarian. In 2007, news reports from West Bengal had made national headlines due to the uniqueness of a bunch of calves that ate live chickens.

This incident happened in Chandpur of North 24 Paraganas district, where a family owned some cows and reared chickens. Both were kept under the same shed. One day, the family noticed that dozens of chickens had gone missing.

I support a blanket ban on beef in India respecting the sentiments of Hindus.
But the case here is different. Out of 78% beef eaters, the label is only on Muslims and Christians as beef eaters, whose total percentage is not more than 16%. That means remaining 62% Hindus do not consider cow as sacred. North East Beef is legal, In Goa it is legal and no restriction on export of Beef.
    This is totally hypocrisy!

Dear Abdallah not from Mangalore but Calicut,

Beef exports from India may be high, but having lived in many progressive societies, where clearly mentioning the country of origin is mandatory, never came across beef exported from India. There, beef exported from Australia and US are very popular. Where are we exporting them to then?
Most exports worth the salt are made to these very progressive societies. Whom is India selling beef below market price then?

Let us not get carried away by this false narrative.
