Bengaluru: Rs 1.16 lac crore central funds to improve Shiradi, Charmadi ghats - Nitin Gadkari

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Dec 20: Nitin Gadkari, union minister of road transport and highways, micro, small and medium enterprises, on Saturday December 19 said that the union government will invest an amount of Rs 1,16,144 crore to augment the road network in Karnataka in coming years.

The amount has been sanctioned to carry out three projects with a view of safety of road users on Shiradi ghat, Charmadi ghat and Sampaje ghat, he said.

Speaking after dedicating 33 National Highway projects worth Rs 10,904 crore covering 1,197 km length in a virtual event held here, Gadkari said that under the Bharatmala and other schemes, as many as 19 works at a cost of Rs 31,035 crore are already under progress.

The minister further said that approval has been given for the detailed project report (DPR) on tunnel work stretching 23.60 km on Shiradi ghat. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 10,000 crore. Bid documents, permission and land acquisition works of the project are in progress.

"Bid document, statutory clearances and land acquisition plans are under progress," he said.

The union minister claimed that with an aim to provide smooth connectivity to the ports for the benefit of trade and economy, the entire coastal road from Goa border to Kerala border connecting the port cities of Belekeri, Karwar and Mangaluru covering a length of 278 km has been taken up at a cost of Rs 3,443 crore and the work has substantially been completed.

He added that the union government aims to improve the safety of road users by providing protective measures on hill slopes on Shiradi Ghat on NH 75, Charmadi Ghat on NH 73 and Sampaje Ghat on NH 275. "All these three works are amounting to Rs 115 crore," he said.

According to Gadkari, three projects of 76 km in Karnataka in Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, which is identified as one of the priority projects under Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor has been approved and bids are invited.

The union minister also claimed that a final feasibility report on setting up a multimodal logistic park in Muddalingenahalli near Dabaspet in Tumkuru district is expected in February 2021. "This project is aimed to improve the logistics efficiency, thus enabling reduction in logistics cost," he said.

The event was attended by Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, union ministers Prahlad Joshi, Sadanand Gowda, Gen Dr V K Singh and senior officers.

To me it looks like video conference of all party was to show whether Rs. 10,000 crore for 23 kms is worth than spending Rs. 10,000 crore for 1000kms. Here is my explanation -
    1. Handling container traffic in the east & west at Chennai & M'lore respectively is going to save a lot of money & fuel in terms of ships avoided being routed around Indian ocean.
    2. 4 hour time to reach Bengaluru is not going to have any effect on MIA as only young people might be able to travel by flybus to reach BIA. Elderly & families would still prefer MIA for domestic connection. One advantage is people with 23 lbs X 2 each would have advantage using flybus, as not all budget airlines would be able to accomodate that much luggage.
    3. People who work in Bengaluru, who now travel once a week to M'lore might decide to travel 2-3 times a week & might plan to buy real estate in M'lore as the distance is reduced to 4 hours. Tunnel road is going to have a huge effect on overall time of travel as traffic which is going smoothly at ghat section is going to have much more than double the time saved (at ghat section) to reach the destination.
    4. In addition to helping M'lore with real estate, it would also help Bengaluru, as it would help in it being International air travel hub as multiple modes of travel to the airport would make it more sustainable as people might find it ok to travel to Bengaluru for a direct connection . When we are ok with going to our neighboring countries for a layover why not having a layover in our own country.
    5. Making Bengaluru as southern hub (& delhi as northern hub & probably mumbai as central hub) for international travel is going to create investments & lots of jobs in a sustainable way.

We all know, India can progress only in the pace SAME as of our infrastructure is being developed.
As per Nitin Gadkari, union minister of road transport, Rs 1,16,144 crore amount has been sanctioned to carry out road network projects in Karnataka. It's great.
The main question is, how long will it take to complete the projects!
Nevertheless, we all need to be hopeful; no life without hope. We don't have any other option.
Always pursue the matter with hope.

I am happy to know that at least the Shiradi Ghat tunnel project is getting approved. which was required with high priority as I have seen people struggling to reach the coastal city in monsoon or festival season and emergency travel including me. wasting so much valuable time on many occasions we reached Udupi after the festival celebration as we stuck in a block in ghat which cleared after many hours.

some times it seems like Udupi has become an island to reach as there is no connectivity by road or train in mansion season

and every year there is repair work which is wasting tax public money. I hope a focused approach will be given to be this project to maintain the quality of the tunnel else it will become one more problem for the future generation as ROAD CLOSED DUE TO TUNNEL REPAIR and on on on..... so I request all the people involved at least this one let it be corruption free ..as it is one of the main WISH of generation

    Regards

I have a lot of respect for Hon. Minister. Unfortunately, he may not be knowing that all the Rs 3,443 is not well spent between Kerala border till Goa border. Especially, DK and Udupi districts have high population density and unique transportation needs. Hence, NH66 should have service roads on both sides of the 4 lane highway throughout these two districts and not just in a few places besides creating flyovers and underpasses in many more locations than what is currently made available. Pedestrian crossing bridges are also needed at many places. We should also urge the railway minister to complete doubling of Konkan railway tracks from Mangaluru to Goa at the earliest besides starting Memu train service between UK, Udupi and DK districts which should reduce some pressure on the NH66 and the service roads.
