Puttur, Dec 21: The UG and PG departments of Physics of St Philomena College, here, on December 21 will arrange a 'Sky Watch Programme' to view ‘The Great Conjunction’ from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm at the college playground.
The two giant planets of the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn will appear as if they meet each other at the western sky. It is visible after sunset for a short span of an hour. This astronomical great conjecture is very rare and appears after 794 years.
During this time, the planets ‘Jupiter’ and ‘Saturn’ will appear as a star. Many astronomers heralded this as a ‘Christmas Star’ and compared it to the ‘Star of Bethlehem’.
These planets can be seen with an unaided eye. However, with the help of the telescope, it is possible to view the rings of Saturn and Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting this giant planet.
The UG and PG departments of Physics of the college extended the invitation to all interested to witness this rare occasion.
