Puttur, Dec 22: When the degree he earned through conventional education did not guarantee him enough income to run the family, a youth chose to start his own business. Now he has grown in stature in the field of his business and has been able to sell his products through various markets all over the country.

The raw material used by the youth is the area sheets found in his own plantation and plantations in the neighbourhood. There are others involved with this field. But the uniqueness of this youngster is that he makes over 60 varieties of plates and items of other daily use. Nowadays, areca sheet plates, glasses and spoons are replacing plastic in functions and programmes as they are nature-friendly. The credit for introducing such nature-friendly things made of areca sheets goes to Srikrishna from Madavu, Puttur, in Dakshina Kannada district.

Srikrishna, after securing his mechanical engineering degree, was searching for employment when five years back he thought of starting his own industry. Noticing that areca nut sheets keep falling on the ground and they were going to waste, he got the idea to start a new business. As there were other industries competing with him, he undertook research to make his products different.

Srikrishna makes different shapes and sizes of plates, soap boxes, ice cream cups, spoons etc. He has created different designs of machinery as per his requirement to make these sheets. His products have entered states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Gujarat. He employs 16 people and provides employment to ladies who have no jobs. He has shown the world that instead of seeking government or private employment, people can succeed if they undertake private enterprises backed by research and ideas.
