Bengaluru, Dec 25: Notwithstanding grave concerns being expressed about the possibility of the second wave of coronavirus infection sweeping the country and new strain of the virus detected in the United Kingdom, the state government has prepared itself for undertaking the task of vaccinating people falling under the emergency priority sector. The task is likely to begin in the third week of January as per the current indications.

As per a report by a Kannada daily, for this purpose, modern field vaccination vehicles (trucks) are being readied. These vehicles will have freezer-cum-vaccination rooms. Out of the 30 crore vaccines proposed in the first installment, Karnataka will get 30 lac units.

Vaccine collection central units have been set up at Bengaluru and Kalaburagi while five divisional units have been identified. The field vaccination vehicles will be used to transport vaccines from these units to hospitals medical colleges having medical staff. The field vaccination vehicles will be used on a public private participation basis, health department sources said.

Senior doctors, who are at the top of the priority list, will get the vaccines ahead of others. Thereafter, junior doctors, postgraduate medical students, nurses and other staff will get them. The police, ASHA workers and civic workers are next in line for the vaccine. In all these groups, elders will get first priority.

It is proposed to distribute emergency vaccination units in cities having high prevalence of the pandemic. Doctors and health staff in Bangaluru will get thie vaccines first followed by districts like Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada and Tumakuru which have high prevalence of the infection.

A list of 2,55,331 staff of government health centres, 2,65,129 private health centres staff as at December 23 have been prepared and kept ready. The list includes 39,000l people from Dakshina Kannada and 18,500 from Uudpi, it is learnt.
