Mangalore Diocesan Legal Cell Inaugurated

Mangalore, Jun 8: Diocesan Legal cell is inaugurated by Rt Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore on 7th June, 2010.  Bishop blessed the newly set up office at Milagres centre building. In his Inaugural address he stressed the need of such legal cell to assist the people who have legal problems. A true and fair legal guidance is the need of the hour, he said. Fr Francis Assisi D’Almeida , a qualified Priest with Rank in LLB from Mangalore University will do this task. He has given a call to all the people to make use of this facility which diocese has set for its faithful.











The purpose and need of the cell is as follows-

  • Christians of Mangalore Diocese are well-equipped with financial and basic infrastructures but litigations are on the increase.
  • Christians at large are ignorant of the existing laws and provisions of law.
  • Priests, religious and the lay leaders are feeling ill-equipped to guide common people to solve their disputes amicably.
  • Diocese of Mangalore has failed to provide a forum for dispute Redressal.
  • People are misguided by the vested interest lawyers.
  • Diocese is struggling to settle legal issues connected with its property and the people.
  • Diocese needs to maintain an archive of legal documents of all the churches and institutions. 
     

Objectives of the Cell:

  • The cell is a forum that provides space for amicable settlement of quarrels and litigations
  • Every Christian in the Diocese of Mangalore shall be given basic legal knowledge.
  • Up to date maintenance of all the required legal documents of every parish of the Diocese of Mangalore by the cell.
  • Talks on legal awareness and especially when New Laws are enacted and Notifications are issued.
  • Taking lead to fight collectively against the violation of Human Rights and Minority rights.  
  • An arbitration committee shall be formed and the disputes related to the Catholics in the Diocese of Mangalore are resolved outside the Court.
  • When in problems, the ignorant common people are regularly guided in matters related to the law.

    Thank you very much for having taken up this responsibility of establishing and being the first director of the Legal Cell. Legal Cell was my long time desire for the Church in Bangalore and I hope you are the right person for the job. I hope this legal cell will be a god-given opportunity for the hapless legally illiterate people for getting apt suggestions to deal with their problems. This will make them approach the right person and also go through the right procedure for finding justice. Good luck and you can count on my support. May God bless you. I also request all the priests and the religious and lay leaders to make the presence of the legal cell known to one and all.

    IT was indeed a good news to read that the office of Diocesan Legal cell was inaugurated at Milagres centre building on 7th June, 2010. I am sure that the legal cell will cater to need the of the Catholic community and hope it will educte and bring awareness amongst the younger generation about their responsibilities. I am sure under the able guidance of young, energetic and dynamic Director of the cell,Rev Fr FRANCIS ASSISI D’ ALMEIDA,( who is a rank holder in LLB) this "Diocesan Legal cell" will reach greater hights.
