Chikkamagaluru, Jan 4: In a strange incident which happened in Tarikere taluk in the district, a bride married a bus conductor after the groom went missing when the time came for him to tie the customary Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride. As the groom, who was present during the previous evening's reception, was not to be seen on the day of the marriage, she chose to marry a bus conductor who volunteered to marry her. This incident happened on Sunday January 3.

The marriages of two brothers, Ashok and Naveen, from Doranalu village near here was to take place with the girls from Davanagere and Chitradurga districts respectively. Ashok's marriage was solemnised with the girl from Davanagere as arranged. But Naveen, who was to marry Sindhu from Sarapanahalli in Hosadurga taluk in Chitradurga district, went missing from the marriage hall where the guests had stayed for the night after the reception, on Saturday midnight. This left both Naveen’s and the parents of the bride-to-be utterly distraught.

Naveen had given company to Sindhu during the previous day's reception. But on Sunday morning it transpired that he was not to be seen. It is learnt that Naveen went away after getting a threat call from a girl with whom he was in love with. The girl said she would visit the marriage hall and consume poison in the presence of the guests. Therefore Naveen, who developed cold feet, ran away on the day of the marriage.

The parents went searching for the groom but failed to find him. As there was information that the lover had asked Naveen to come to Tumakuru, the relatives rushed there but could not find him. His mobile was tracked to Bengaluru. The marriage was about to be cancelled when Chandru, a BMTC bus conductor from Nandi village near Doranalu village came forward to marry the girl, after which the marriage went ahead.
