Refrain from unwarranted criticism of scientists: Health minister Sudhakar

Bengaluru, Jan 5 (IANS): Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar on Tuesday urged people to refrain from unwarranted criticism of scientists that discredits their hard work.

The appeal comes a day after Bharat Biotech Director Krishna Ella lashed out at his critics over allegations that the Hyderabad-based vaccine-maker lacks data on Covaxin.

In a series of tweets, Sudhakar came out in defence of Bharat Biotech and said that Covaxin's phase-3 clinical trial involves 24,000 volunteers and its data will be available soon.

"I humbly appeal to everyone, not as a Health Minister but as a fellow medical professional, to refrain from unwarranted criticism which discredits the hard work of our scientists," he said.

He added that the approval of Bharat Biotech's vaccine marks a significant milestone in India's indigenous novel vaccinology.

"India is one of the largest exporters of vaccines, and the world is looking up to us in the common fight against this global pandemic," he said.

He contended that Bharat Biotech is a globally reputed company enjoying credibility and experience of developing 16 vaccines, including for influenza, Rotavirus, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Chikungunya, Zika and world's first tetanus-toxoid conjugated vaccine for Typhoid.

"Hailing from a humble background, Bharat Biotech's founder Krishna Ella is a passionate professional with a credibility of delivering over four billion vaccine doses to underprivileged people in more than 150 developing countries through UNICEF and other channels," he pointed out.

Heaping praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inspiring leadership, the Minister said that India is at the forefront of scientific innovation to combat Covid-19 pandemic.

"In line with our philosophy of 'Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavantu' and 'Vasudaiva Kutumbakam' India will play a significant role in healing humanity," he tweeted.

Hitting out at the critics, Ella had said on Monday that "I think people should have the patience to read on the Internet and look at what our articles are."

Lauding the scientists for developing an indigenous vaccine in a record time, Sudhakar said on Monday that licence would be given to Bharat Biotech to roll out its Covaxin after completing the third stage clinical trials.

Fully agree with you Edward and Deshbhakt but the question is - when all are feku's, this Andha bakht minister might fool every one in public taking a flu shot saying it is Covid Vaccine!!! So, never under estimate BJP. They have royally fooled 80% of population effectively.

I wouldn't trust Covaxin as 3rd round vaccine test has not been completed nor there is any data made public on it efficacies on the first 2 rounds and the third round.

since when has BJP shown any respect for real science? - all its members, without exception, practise pseudo-science. The COVAXIN fiasco is also an example of the same. No one in the BJP has the moral authority to tell the public how to behave towards science and scientists.

Please don’t drag the company and its scientists in your hype of fake talk. Company hasn’t said nothing about this vaccine so far its only you who is jumping like headless chicken. It’s just like bringing in army in between and questioning loyalty to take undue credit for your own made up surgical strikes.

Inventions are more as a result of observation rather than R&D.When you go abroad visit one of the R&D centers ,most of the work today are copy paste jobs with minor modifications. As far as vaccines are concerned Jennner who developed the world's first vaccine got the idea from his milkmaid not from R&D, he has himself quoted that his milkmaid challenged him that she would never get smallpox as the cattle there had cowpox and the concept of cross immunity came into being. Before small pox vaccine a procedure called variolation was done ,this idea came from Assam in India. Many Indian companies have developed new drugs,as the list is endless I am not mentioning it here.Covaxin the best vaccine for covid 19 is developed from scratch in India. Hyderabad and Pune are the vaccine capitals of the world. What more do you want..... Most of the generic and bulk drugs that US and Europe use originate in India!!!
