Karnataka will enact Love Jihad Act soon: Minister Patil

Bengaluru, Jan 7 (IANS): Karnataka Minority Welfare and Textiles Minister Shrimant Balasaheb Patil on Wednesday said that very shortly the 'Love Jihad Act' will be enacted in the state.

The Love Jihad Act is the name given by the BJP to a law to prevent 'forcible conversions' through marriage. This term was first coined by right wing activists in Mangaluru in 2000.

Patil told reporters here that there is no confusion within the ruling BJP in the state over bringing the Love Jihad Act. "This is a very huge subject involving many aspects. Therefore, various departments are trying to elicit opinions through consultation with experts. At present, the legal department is deliberating about this with experts," he explained.

He also added that the government is also contemplating to introduce scholastic syllabus in Madrasas. "We want to bring reforms in Madrasas. There is a need for those who come out of these schools to directly take admission in ITI courses," he said.

It may be recalled that Uttar Pradesh had enacted an ordinance against forcible or fraudulent religious conversions, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 50,000 under different categories.

One of the vocal proponents of the Love Jihad Act is incumbent Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, who has been saying that Love Jihad is an international conspiracy, and there is a racket that traps young girls on the pretext of love.

"People should be aware of those exploiting young girls and converting them to their religion. We should systematically remove this racket from our society. Conventions like today will create awareness about this," he had said while demanding the BJP to come out with a stringent law banning Love Jihad.

Two months ago, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had formally announced that the government would take strong measures to put an end to religious conversion in the name of love and marriage.

Since Yediyurappa's formal announcement, credence to enact laws to ban Love Jihad has only grown in proportion.

The BJP state unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel has been regularly tweeting and demanding that a stringent law against Love Jihad is needed in Karnataka.

Under the present government people's life is becoming more and more miserable with newer and meaningless laws. It's like all out attack on people's freedom and democratic rights all the time. Bhakths are blindly supporting whatever the government does and minorities have no freedom to oppose. There is nothing called progress or development. We are going backwards each day as people in power are living in the past and have a destructive agenda.

Incompetent BJP has nothing to showcase on the economic front. Modi has failed miserably with GST, Demonetization, Make in India, Digital India, 100 smart cities and most importantly generating jobs.

So this is their new tactic to divert our attention from Modi's failures.

Sirjee.... best is to give that 3 L bond to all girls, not to only to those who are eligible to marry priests. They are otherwise burdened under dowry obligation.

Challenge - there will be no defection with men of other religion. Hence defeat of Love - jjihaad.

    @ RSRB,
"Uniform Civil Code gives justice to all caste, creed, religion and race..."
Possible from the government side but not from the public or people's thinking power or mind set.
Cast & creed differences and social distancing may not wash away as easily as we think.
Upper class will never easily fall to any pressure to consider the lower class (schedule class) are equal human beings in comparison to them.

As of date bjp and its pariwar failed to define term Love Jihad. LOL..... And since this law is applicable irrespective of any faith but yet the title is given for the bill as "Love Jihad".. Isn't bjp proving over and again as a extreme communal party? How come they justify the nation with the slogan "Sab ka saath sab ka vikas" and decieve God by swearing an oath of office before assuming the duties of an office....

Constitution enshrines freedom of speech and liberty. Also enables freedom to wear and practice religion of choice. The government legislation's on cows and marriage is blatant infringement. If cow protection is agenda the start with forced breeding, excessive milking and lack of infrastructure or cow shelters.

Diversionary tactics to divert the attention of people from the total failure on all fronts. of the BJP at the centre and the state. Typical Headlines management laced with fear mongering for majority appeasment when there has been no change whatsoever in the demography of the nation for decades. In fact the Minorities have been contracting or migrating to greener pastures.
