Illinois, Jun 10: Dr Nagabhushan residing in Chicago here has been honoured by the Karnataka Government with many literary awards for his poetic skills.
He published his first collection of Kannada poems, ‘Bhava Taranga’, a collection of 56 poems in 2008. The book was released during fifth AKKA world Kannada convention, 2008 in Chicago. It was selected for Professor HSK Literary Award 2010, a Karnataka State award by Sahitya and Samskrutika Gramantara Buddhi Jivigala Balaga, Mysore, India.
The same organization also conducted Karnataka state level Kannada poem competition for the celebration of 200th Rajya Kannada Sammelana in memory of Da Raa Bendre and Dr Nagabhushan won the Vara Kavi Daa Raa Bendre award 2010. He has also won Karnataka State award, the Raghavendra Sadbhava award 2010, for excelling in Kannada literature and contribution to science.
Dr Nagabhushan originally hails from Mangalore. He has written many poems in Kannada, Tulu and English. Many of his poems have been published in Thatskannada.com, GulfKannadiga, Kannada Hanigalu and other Kannada publications.
He was the first one to show that turmeric (Curcumin), ginger (zingerone), garlic (Diallylsulfide) and catechu (catechin) has cancer preventing activity. For his research, he has won more than 20 awards in India, USA, Japan and Germany. The active compound of turmeric, curcumin the yellow colouring principle is undergoing clinical trials for the prevention of cancers at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, USA.
Dr Nagabhushan also produced two Kannada music CDs ‘Ushaaraga Deepika’ and ‘Usha Basava Vaibhava’. The lyrics were written by Dr Nagabhushan himself and music was tuned by famous singer Ram Prasad. Prasad also rendered voice for all the songs.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa released the CDs and Bhava Taranga in Bangalore. Well-known humorist professor Krishne Gowda and sugama sangeetha singer, Karnataka Rajyotsava award recipient Kikkeri Krishnamurthy released it in Mysore.
Dr Nagabhushan had his education at Anandashrama High School, Someshwar, St Aloysius College, Mangalore, Mangalagangotri, Konaje and Tata Cancer Institute, Mumbai, India.
