Mumbai, June 10 (IANS) Six candidates from various parties were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra Thursday after an independent candidate withdrew at the last minute.
Congress' Vijay Darda and Avinash Pandey, Nationalist Congress Party's Tariq Anwar and Ishwarlal Jain, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Piyush and Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena were the successful candidates.
Prominent Congress leader Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, who filed his nomination as an independent, withdrew at the last minute paving the way for the unopposed election of the remaining six party supported candidates.
Elections for the 10 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council are also underway. There are 11 candidates in the race and the results are expected later Thursday.
