Elderly citizens treated badly: Karnataka stands second in country

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jan 9: Karnataka has got the dubious distinction of having been listed at No. 2 behind Bihar among Indian states where elderly citizens are badly treated. Ten percent of the senior citizens here have said that they are badly treated, as per the survey conducted in the country to assess the health, social and financial condition of the aged people.

Fourteen percent of the senior citizens in the state claim that they are being looked after badly. Their main grouse is at non-availability of assistance in attending to their daily chores. At the national level, elders have been subjected to this bad experience at least once in two months as per the said survey. Karnataka is ranked second in the list of states where aged people are neglected.

The survey covered 72,250 elderly people all over the country. Seventy-five percent among them have been suffering from one of the other chronic diseases. Forty percent have physical deformities and 20 percent have mental problems. Forty percent have lung complications and ten percent have issues with having a good sleep. Union health minister Harshvardhan, says that they need to get good medical care.

As per the 2011 census, this country had ten crore senior citizens. This number is likely to cross 30 crore by the year 2050. Fifty percent of people aged 45 and above have lung-related health complications, which is higher than all other states. Ten percent of over 60 face serious breathing problems, which is again higher than all other states. The other problems commonly faced are eyesight, hearing etc and treatment cost is also the highest in Karnataka.

God fearing persons will treat elderly persons fairly. It's is clear sign of diminishing spiritual values in life. We are not what we speak, but what we do. What we sow, so shall we reap.

I remember one morning being in the lobby of a crowded local hospital here in Mangalore. The main registration area was crowded with many young people in their 20's and 30's who had come to the hospital to get check ups, tests and certificates for sports related activities and employment. Standing nearby me was a lone woman in her 70's who seemed lost in the crowd. She didn't seem to know how to register, nor which desk department to approach, She stood still in the middle of the floor for nearly an hour without the hostesses or staff members approaching or offering her help or service. Meanwhile the young clientele were quickly ushered in and out of the physicians' offices. Even the new arrivals of youth were given priority of attention and service before her. I felt great compassion and sorrow for her. I was fortunate. I had a family member. This scemario seems quite common here in Mangalore.

Mohammed India, here it was mentioned not related to any religion but simply elder people. That comes in every religion.Problems arise everywhere .Wish govt should make it a point to help elders by social workers ,not only in their daily chores but help them to organize hospital visits or explain things that many elders dont know. How many elder people can work on computer?Nowadays many things are done only by computer.Banking ,paying bills etc.one more important thing is many complain of difficulty in breathing. That might come from bad air in city.Full of dust ,no fresh air ,many smoke cigaretts. That too a cause for bad breathing,asthma.etc.daily excercise to elders are very important .Go for walk or practice some jogging or help them to go shopping etc.
