Mangalore, Jun 12: As the coast received copious rains on Friday June 11, several areas experienced artificial floods because of clogged drains, incomplete road works, and unscientific constructions that have blocked water ways. The timings of the arrival and departure of several flights from and to the local airport were affected.
While the city, Suratkal, Panambur, Ullal etc., got good rains, places like B C Road, Mulky and nearby places received heavy rains. The pedestrians were seen struggling to make their way through the debris and standing water in the city, at places where road concreting work is going on.
As rain water entered several shops in Bantwal because of the half-completed national highway widening work, a local leader tried to block traffic on the highway, in protest against the failure of the authorities. However, the policemen intervened and cleared the highway thereafter, not before a verbal skirmish ensued between the local sub-inspector and a municipal councillor. Later, MLA, Ramanath Rai, visited the spot, pacified the agitated locals, and promised to sort out matters soon. Some citizens, angered by the fact that standing water up to a depth of a foot was creating problems for them, also tried to block traffic at Polali Cross by placing stones across the road.
Although sea erosion was feared in Ullal, Mukkacheri, Mogaveerapatna etc., so far, the sea has remained stable. Subrahmanya, Beltangady, Sullia, Kadaba etc., got normal rains. Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala taluks also experienced cloudy weather with intermittent rains on Friday.
The Jet Airways flight that arrived at the local airport at 10.40 am was diverted to Bangalore because of rains. It came back at 2.40 pm, and departed for Mumbai at 3.20, four hours behind schedule. Jet Airways flight that was expected to reach Bajpe airport at 2 pm came at 3 pm and left for Mumbai at 3.45 pm. Likewise, the Indian Airlines flight from Mumbai reached here at 3 pm as against its normal time of 12.25 pm, and went back to Mumbai at 3.40 pm. Air India flight to Dubai, which was to leave to Dubai at 9.40 am, reached here at 10.20 as there was rain in Kozhikode when it was scheduled to take off. It left for Dubai at 12.50 because of rains, airport sources said.
