Mangaluru: Sexual harassment in bus - 41-year-old accused arrested

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jan 21: “The accused in connection to the sexual harassment of woman in a private bus on January 14 has been arrested,” informed police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.

The arrested has been identified as Hussain (41), a resident of Kasargod.

Addressing media here on Thursday January 21, Shashi Kumar said, “A woman had shared on social media about the horrific incident she experienced in a private bus in which she was travelling. The woman alleged sexual harassment on her way from KS Hegde to Pumpwell in the bus. She even raised an alarm in the bus but the conductor and passengers were mute spectators. Even though the woman warned the accused of clicking his picture and posting on social media, the accused was seen striking a pose for the photo. He even thanked the victim before leaving the bus. We will also probe whether the accused has done such offences in Kasargod.

“The police took the matter seriously after the women came out on social media. Several tourists and people from other districts visit Mangaluru. It may be 4 am or 9 pm, students and workers travel in public transport. If such incidents occur, it will be a black mark for Mangaluru.

“Victims have to raise an alarm if such incident occur. It is shocking to see that the bus conductor and passengers failed to respond. Public transport without CCTV is a huge drawback. We will hold discussion with the deputy commissioner and stakeholders about installing CCTV in public transport at the earliest.

“I thank the woman who was courageous enough to come forward and raise this issue. This will definitely inspire many girls who have been through such issues to come forward. There might be several such incidents where women or girls hesitate to complain. If any female has experienced such incidents, feel free to contact the nearby police station or higher officials. I also thank Dr Vidya from Aloysius who is part of ‘Moms of Mangalore’ forum who stood with the victim and supported her.

“When such incident occurs, public should remember their social responsibility and intervene. It does not mean that they should take law in their hands but they should inform the police,” he said.

The police commissioner later felicitated the woman for her courage to raise the issue and inspiring others. He also announced a reward of Rs 10,000 to the police team who worked hard to nab the culprit.

The operation was carried out by DCP Hariram Shankar, DCP Vinay Goankar, ACP South Ranjith Kumar, Konaje police station, and staff of women police station.

The women even slapped the accused during the press conference.

Two days after the incident, the woman met with a bike accident with her brother and suffered a fracture on her leg.

Great job of police. This man is not even show any guilty feelings. He shows the world that nothing has happened and everything is ok. It is a upbringing and teachings makes human go evil. Most of our Indians are best people but few rogues are become like evil minded. What is the action of police other than catching him and showing on photos? What kind of punishment he will be given?

    Rajesh,

You should have an air about what happened. The bus Driver/conductor obviously knew the man but since the lady was in covered garment, they may have thought that the two know each other and it could be their personal problem blew up in the public. So much audacity the man displayed in harassing her.

Obviously when two members of one community are together, nobody, nobody interfere in their affair. It's only when individuals of different communities unite, even peacefully, our youth get their BP high.

He is Hussain-41 from Kasargod. His attitude in photo is synonymous with bollywood side actor; not someone who had been in custody of police.

If 41 long years of experience did not break in sanity, when will it? I may be wrong, but, it most likely appears to be a diwanapan to incite jealousy in his other lawfully wedded, other wives by taking the latest best bet home. If that is true, this is heights of objectification of opposite sex.

Really appreciate the bravery of the young lady and also how police have responded to this. But they seem to have gone soft on their usual urge, probably since he was to be paraded for photo-op.

First of all, congratulations to our proud Police Commissioner and his excellent team. Hope the government will not transfer him for doing the good job. He has done a lot of good within few days of his posting in DK. Truly he is a blessing to us. Well done by the victim and all those who supported her. The technology is so advanced now adays, they should really install d CCTV inside d public transport specially city buses. There should be buses only for women so it is safer for us.

Perverts are not born... rather they are created !!! Men are indoctrinated at a young age, to view girls as " Sex Objects " freely available to be ravaged, permitted to have sex slaves n endlessly produce children !!!! This mindset brings out the evil monster, as they patrol streets, markets, buses, trains, waiting for an opportunity to let loose their animal lust, in our society !!!!!

Third degree torture, will never solve the basic problem of this sexual accused person. He seems to be abnormal and healthy. Police should treat him in abnormal until he becomes 100% normal.

At-lease condemn the act man ?? What is the use she is in Hijab ? Is it an outsider troubling her ? What if he wasn't from the community ? Actually that 'clam since the incident' is because you guys knew him. Else, the entire city would have been up in flames by the end of the day.

Please look within your own community before bringing airport bombing matter to counter the trouble this guy gave to the lady.
