Mangaluru sexual harassment case: Victim urges women to raise voice against injustice

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Naseema Azlina speaking to media, recalled the horrific incident she faced on January 14, "I was on my way to Pumpwell from my house. Near KS Hegde hospital the accused climbed the bus and sat beside me. The accused started harassing after which I warned him twice, later he went to the back of the bus and got down. After three stops he boarded the bus again and continued to harass me. I started to object his actions from Kallappu but no one came forward to help or respond which was painful to witness. While clicking his picture without any shame he posed for the camera and thanked me."

"This is not the first time that I have faced harassment. 99% of women, ladies, are harassed by men. I want to bring a change, by being quiet the accused will not stop the harassment. I urge people to raise voice against such wrongdoings," said Naseema Azlina.

"It is the happiest day of my life. Many asked me whether the accused is behind my road accident, absolutely not, accident has no connection with the accused. After the incident I got several messages of women who shared their experience. Our parents allow us to travel by public transport because they feel there are enough people who maybe will defend us in such instances. It is also the responsibility of bus conductor as he takes money from us. But women should also be ready to react against such situations'' said Naseema.

"I thank police department who treated me with such respect. I urge every women, ladies, girls to react when they experience such horrific incidents, the people around us will just notice but it is us who should raise voice against harassment,'' she added.

Dr Vidya said, "I approached her after the incident and asked her whether she filed a police complaint, she was silent for a minute. I stood with her in support to file a police complaint. When you look at the present situation, several questions popped out such as whether action will be taken, will it be a problem for us. As soon as she filed a police complaint, the very next day she met with an accident. After that incident, many shared their experience. I feel we can even write book about the ordeal women face."

"This might be the first step taken by Naseema, in Mangaluru this should be a revolution, every women should see to it that the culprit does not escape the law. The accused got beaten up by Naseema, every culprit should think twice before committing any offence. We as a women, ladies we are all given values, our family is been taking care of us so well. With the intension that our daughter will come home safe they allow us to step out. In this process there are some idiotic minds who disturb our peace of mind. Today it is Naseema tomorrow it will be someone else."

After two days of incident, Naseema met with an accident where she suffered leg fracture. Naseema even slapped the accused during the press conference. For her bravery, she was also felicitated by police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.

Hats off to Naseema. She took a very strong step and did a very great thing. The bus conductor should have been arrested also besides because it is his duty to take action when she has raised an alarm so clearly.

Besides Naseema, credit should also go to Dr. Vidya for standing with her, for encouraging and motivating her to file police complaint.

While I am not a proponent of instant justice or in favor or taking law onto their own hands, this bus was being driven by a driver, there definitely must be a conductor strategically placed to collect all the monies possible and last but not least this bus is supposed to transport more than one person.

How did this happen in the presence of these many people and they all were mute spectators or were cheerleaders on the sidelines? They did not have the guts to protest the treatment to the fellow citizen? Did they all focus their energies to put their smartphone to full use and save the best for how to better show their creativity on the internet? Is this the environment these fellow passengers including driver and conductor condone and want to bring up their children in?

    What a shame...

Goes to prove that dress (whether a burqa or jeans) is not a provoking factor in such incidents. Perverts attack vulnerable.

Sweet box which is kept open attracts more flies.
Better keep it closed to avoid at least 99% of the flies. Remaining 1% will be taken care by the POLICE.

Sainik, girls are not sweets and men are not flies. What analogy is this. If flies can't be controlled, we kill them.
