Mangaluru: Effluents from Kavoor tarnishing image of Smart City

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 2: For the last four to five months, effluents have been flowing through the open drain by the side of the main road here, spreading terrible stench all across. The drain is full of plastic waste. The locals are therefore compelled to keep their nostrils closed.

This is happening right at Kavoor, a part of the city that is hoping to become Smart City in its true sense shortly. In front of the police station at Kavoor, waste water has been flowing by the roadside. The stinking water appears like extending a welcome to those who arrive at the city through Kateel and Bajpe.

Plastic waste that has got accumulated in the drain has turned the situation more rose. Some people have cultivated the habit of bringing waste packed in plastic in vehicles and throwing this waste into the drain. The corporation people engaged for garbage clearance do not pick this waste. The main road is made of concrete, and if the pedestrians or two-wheeler riders accidentally reach the edge of the road, they can easily topple into the waste water and get drenched. The locals want the city corporation officials to penalise those who throw waste there.

Local corporator Sumangala, says that the problem has been created due to the leakage of water because of the capacity of the underground drainage pipe fixed a few years ago not being sufficient for the current load. She said that the ADB have verified the issue and works will be taken up soon to address the problem.

Why are the local people compelled to close their nose? Are the MP/MLA responsible for this? Nice to pass the buck.

If smart city project is to be success people of the city must be smart!! Iam not telling for all but for some who have lack of education and information about smart city. MCC should start awareness campaign to educate such people.

Administration should start keeping Garbage ( like before) bin in selected places where citizens throw Garbage, so people will throw in that and Antony Garbage must collect from those bins also. This is my opinion. Otherwise it will be difficult to control.
