Mangaluru zone under-19 cricket team - Discrimination by selectors alleged

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Feb 7: Former United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Goa cricketer Dayanand Bangera has alleged discrimination by the selectors who pick players for the under-19 team of Mangaluru zone.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Dayanand Bangera said, “I received several complaints from Udupi and Mangaluru over selection process. The selectors pick players from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts which is combined as Mangaluru zone. It looks like there are different rules for different players in Udupi and Mangaluru. The selection committee in Mangaluru is appointed by Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Parents and children are afraid to speak to the selectors fearing vengeance from them.

“A player who scored a century and a double century was ignored and not included in Mangaluru district team just because he had quit a club owned by one of the selectors. Such injustice will demotivate the children. The selectors are spoiling the name of KSCA. I have brought this to the notice of KSCA president Roger Binny. Even in U-23 tournament, being an ICC level 2 and ACC level 2 coach, I have seen injustice. The selection process in Mangaluru is totally wrong. They seem following the process of the 70s and 80s which has given scope for cheating,” he said.

“Ravind got the district level ‘Best Batsman’ award in 2016-17 and also secured the highest number of wickets. In 2017-18 also he bagged the district best batsman award in addition to taking highest wickets in less number of matches. He has also secured best batsman at the inter-district college level in 2019-20. We have decided to complain to the PMO in this connection,” Ravind's father Sudheer had said speaking at a press meet earlier.

Further, Karavali Cricket Academy (KCA) president Shanti Mohan has alleged the results of selection of U-19 players from Mangaluru and Udupi districts, to be very unfair. She said that in KSCA Bengaluru U-19 2021 tournament, players like Sachit Ryan, Sahoran and Ravind performed outstandingly well, but are still not selected for the district team.

It is also alleged that a private cricket coaching academy is playing ‘politics’ and players who are below the age of 16 years are being selected for the U-19 team than the U-16 team. That was the case of a player from Udupi. While Rohan Rovenkar, a U-16 player went all the way from Bengaluru to Mangaluru for U-19 selection, he was rejected as he was below the age of 16.

With all of the above comments, It's quite disturbing to know about the selection process failing it's due diligence in getting the right players into the playing 11 and ignoring the best of talent from in and around Mangaluru. Guess this being one reason that we just have a couple of them played in Team India so far. KSCA should take note of this article and of course the comments posted by the experts and / or the frustrated players/parents of players and brain storm in getting the right selection process in force. Politics will only fail the game in the region and the interest of budding Cricketers to take a step forward in making their future out of this game when these kind of things happen in the selections for its going to be a forgone conclusion in their mind that no matter what, however good they are in the game of Cricket, they will not stand a chance if such polity would play a role in it. kSCA... It's time to retrospect on the selection committee and it's actions on the selection process in the Mangaluru region.

I have been playing cricket in mangalore as well as Bangalore from past 25 years... And very much aware of what Nelson had to go through.. One of the finest leftarm spinner I have played with... The treatment he got from selectors in Bangalore and from Mr raghuram bhatt spoilt his career... Same happing with players in mangalore now... There are few really good selectors in mangalore who r not biased and don't take any bullshit from the members they just pick players based on performance .. Either They are not called or they are not willing to come coz of interference.... Many careers have been spoilt coz of biased coaches who prefer their own set of players... And I am one of the victim... U can't select players seeing him for a min or two... Criteria should be given to his performance that season be it league or college matches... U23 was a disaster this year... Top scorers not selected.... M not supporting and one player but that's the fact... Those who run academy or coach should not interfere in selections. Selectors are there they will do their best... Y is it so hard to find selectors? I have been following cricket form a long time and I know few of selectors personally who don't take any s**t from certain coaches... Y don't they stick to such people... Why chop and change... U get selectors who is a dummy and give him the names of players u want.... Big change needed.... Not complaining about convenor or chairman but they should be aware of the things happening....

The main culprit is muthu who ruined my career. this was my last year after performing good in league stages I didn't get a chance in under 23 zonal team, from Last 2 years after performing good in league stages didn't get selected, this was my last year now how I can play in higher level, how can I get chance from now, I saw Ankith kuckian comment he is absolutely right I agree with him . He didn't maintained name of that sir . That sir is not other then muthu who called 7-8 players Infront of everyone and made them to sit and spoke with them one by one for at least 5 minutes . I asked with one of player why they called u he told me that muthu called and asked whether he played zonals before , muthu is a person who is the main culprit and mastermind behind discrimination he is selecting players who are under him or one who pay money to him. If u want to be in the team pay money and u need not to perform in the league matches or anywhere just pay money and ur name will be reserved in top 15 . That's how muthu manages mangalore zone cricket, he promote himself as kl Rahul coach but he is not kl Rahul coach he is fake and if he is a kl Rahul coach if he is that much capable or quality coach then why after kl Rahul other player didn't come up?? and play in higher level or international level?? Because he uses name of kl Rahul to make money. Kl Rahul is a great player with great skill he played in bangalore and settled there not because of Jayaraj muthu. It's logic I think many mangalorean who follow mangalore cricket or play in mangalore they will agree with me. Muthu should be punished for ruining many players career like me and should throw out of mangalore cricket.

Same issue happened with U-23 selection. Inspired of having more experience and match knowledge, my friends son was not selected in the team.. He is playing for one of the most prominent and renowned club from past many years. This is very sad to know that Mangalore KSCA has gone down to this level . This will not only spoil the name of Mangalore cricket but also will demotivate players and we may not see any Mangalore players reach higher levels in cricket. This is high time that KSCA take action against this.

Yes this happened in under 23 selection too this year . Performed players didn't get a chance . They select the players by seeing their family background and college they are from . Selection process is made by keeping in view they played before any zonals or they are from respective college or whether they know their parents. Selection trial is made only to show in newspaper and to show that they are conducting selection trial but reality is 15 players squad is already they will select before the selection day. I performed well in league matches last year and also performed good in selection trial but did not selected and there are few players who have selected for final team who didn't perform well in league matches and also didn't do in selection trials but still they were in the squad I don't know in which department they get selected as a result manngalore under 23 team Won only 1 matches in zonals. And one more surprising thing I noticed may be other players also noticed that when under 23 selection is going on same time one sir I not want to name him, called 7-8 players and asked whether they played last year zonals or they have played zonals before and that player didn't do well in selection trials and shockingly they were in the squad. If that's the case why they should call for selection trial they can call selected players who are from selected colleges and players who have good family background and then they can make the selection. Selection should be made by seeing their last year league or match performances and also selection trials to check whether they are in same form or fit to be the part of squad but here not that the cases, they will select players just seeing family background and college they represent. Then why they should keep the zone team as mangalore zone they can keep the team as their college name I think that's the good . So many players had last year under 3 selection because of these kind of people they lost their chance

An exactly similar situation as described here occurred a few years back with my colleagues son. He was not selected though he was the best batsman. Out of sheer frustration and partisan politics in selection he had now moved to bangalore. This is happening here on a regular basis. IT IS HIGH TIME THERE IS ACCOUNTABILITY AND HONESTY IN SELECTION. KSCA led by Mr Roger Binny must do more to root out corruption and ensure only talent and performance is the ONLY CRITERIA FOR SELECTION . ITS A MATTER OF GREAT SHAME FOR ALL MANGLOREANS THAT THIS IS REGULARLY HAPPENING.

Lack of infrastructure/facilities, no turf ground, no proper school/college level tournament where kids can be judged through their performances rather they keep 1 or 2 days of net trial from where they select. May be their eyes have some super power to judge a kid only with this 3 min batting session. These people have made a joke of this selection…. having so much of talent no wonder our boys are not seen in any high level. These selector and management of KSCA Mangalore should be taken for accountability.

Absolute rubbish!! A parent should support his child to become better not to make him believe he is the best when he is not. I witnessed Raveends 200 when he played against a college team of madikeri and he was dropped more than 5 times in the match. He himself drops several catches costing the game for this side. The players who got selected for the district team this year have great performances playing league matches in bangalore and Raveend has not performed anything in higher level. His father is only showing school level matches scores which is point less as a 11 picked for a school or college is easy to demolish for any ordinary batsman.

No one checked or published how many chances Sachin or kambli got in their world record stand in school cricket. Pre DRS how many players benefited due to on field umpires mistake One should have mettle to score big one. Did you score any big..I scored many. Only Ravindu know the pain and not you. With chances why others are not scored?

It is very important that we have good grass-root selection system so that our local players get a chance to play There should no discrimination based on colour race religion financial status or any other criteria It should be only talent and nothing else That's the right way to go forward

This happened to me well 25 years ago. A player is discriminated based on his colleague, cast and family background. It is a shame that a cricket-loving country like India cannot produce world-class fast bowlers.

Mr.Bangera With due respect to you..... One of the best spinner from Mangalore was ignored many times especially by Mr.Raghu Ram Bhat and karnataka state cricket association .He has won many best bowler awards in KSCA first division league matches. As he was from Mangalore he used to ignore each and every time for the state team. At that time nobody raised his issues. The Mangalore Cricket Association doesn't even have guts to talk to the state cricket association. Whenever state team was announced and he was not selected selectors always used to tell him better luck next time even though he was the best spin bowler and his state players feared him to play his bowling . He is non other than Nelson Pinto who was purposefully denied by selectors especially Mr.Raghu Ram Bhat he always used to hate this best of the best spin bowler. One can see his bowling achievements in state first diving tournaments. Now you are coming and complaining about selection of Mangalore where where you when this good spin bowler was ignored who would have represented India if he would have got selected to state team. Mangalore Cricket Association administration is just for name sake as so many players where ignored by state cricket association. Only KL Rahul got selected who is a classy player. Hope atleast now you woke up to show cause this selection process. Hoping that you get the peoples support and you will not get the harsh treatment from state cricket association for bringing this issue. Good Luck.

The same happened to my son couple of years ago. I had to call my son back from Bengaluru under 16 state level selection camp due to the unfair attitude of Muthu, who is a selector and runs cricket academy in Mangaluru. My son had left Muthu's academy and had joined another academy for which Muthu and his coaches were very unfair with him. Hope KSCA takes this matter seriously and takes disciplinary action against Muthu and his boss MA.

I think nowadays they see not only performance, but also other parameters to select. In our country from BCCI and other association, the main members who have not played Cricket nor know the rules of Cricket. This is the FATE and FACT of our Cricket.
