Mangaluru, Feb 10: Congenital Heart Diseases Awareness Week is observed from February 7 to 14.
On the occasion an awareness programme was held at A J Hospital & Research Centre conference hall on February 10.
Dr Santhosh Soans, the past president of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), founder president of Medical Education Chapter of IAP and professor and HoD of the department of Paediatrics, A J Institute of Medical Sciences inaugurated the programme by lighting a traditional lamp.
Medical direcor, Dr Prashanth Marla, director of medical administration, Dr Amitha Marla, consultant paediatric cardiologist, Dr Prem Alva, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Jayashankar Marla, consultant interventional cardiologist, Dr B V Manjunath, consultants, faculty, staff and students were present.
Dr Santhosh Soans in his inaugural address lauded Dr Prem Alva’s service and efforts in detecting, treating congenital heart diseases and creating awareness on the same.
Dr Prem Alva spoke on the importance of detecting and treatment of congenital heart diseases in the early years of life.
A heart check-up camp for children with cardiac problems will be held in the out-patient department (2nd floor) of A J Hospital & Research Centre on Saturday February 13. The camp participants will be offered free consultation and 50% discount on Echocardiography.
Children with the following problems can avail of the camp benefit:
- Bluish discoloration of lips
- Recurrent respiratory infections
- Poor weight gain and poor feeding
- Children known to have heart disease
The first and only full-fledged Pediatric Cardiology Centre of Dakshina Kannada is functioning at A J Hospital & Research Centre. Simple heart defects can be cured by pin-hole procedures and complex defects treated by open heart surgeries, which are now routinely done at A J Hospital.
