Bantwal, Feb 11: Independent candidate, Pravin B Thumbe is elected president of Thumbe gram panchayat. BJP supported candidate Jayanti is elected vice-president.
Six BJP supported candidates had won in Thumbe gram panchayat which has a total strength of 16 members. Five SDPI candidates, three Congress candidates and two independent candidates were also victorious.
In the elections for the post of president held today, BJP supported candidate Kishore, SDPI supported candidate Zuhoor Ahmed and independent candidate Pravin B had filed their nominations. BJP supported candidate Jayanti, SDPI candidate Athika Banu and independent candidate Shashikala Kothari had filed nominations for the post of vice-president.
Independent candidate Pravin B received two votes from independents including himself, three votes from Congress and two votes from BJP and was elected president with a total number of seven votes. SDPI candidate Zuhoor Ahmed received five votes and BJP supported candidate Kishore received four votes and were defeated.
For the post of vice-president, BJP supported Jayanti, received six votes and was elected vice-president. SDPI supported candidate Athika Banu and independent candidate Shashikal received five votes each.
Pravin B, the new president who was identified in BJP in the past was the vice-president of gram panchayat in the last term. As the BJP candidates had tabled a no-confidence motion before the expiry of his term, he had lost the position of vice-president.
Pravin had won as independent in the recent gram panchayat elections. Congress party had supported him without contesting against him during the elections. Congress party had also supported him without filing nominations for the post of president. As two members of BJP also voted in favor of him, he was elected as the president.
