Bengaluru, Feb 17: Deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, who also holds higher education portfolio, said the state government wants to put an end to the system of appointing guest lecturers and announced that a proposal for appointing 8,000 lecturers has been submitted to chief minister B S Yediyurappa.

Speaking to the media after visiting government first-grade women’s college at Krishnaraja Nagara on Wednesday, he said the demand has been submitted to the chief minister during a pre-budget meeting.

The appointment of lecturers on a permanent basis would help to maintain quality of teaching, which is one of the primary objectives of the national education policy, he said.

Dr Narayan said so far only 2% of the budget allocation was being given to the higher education and it has been urged to increase it by 3.5% for which the chief has responded positively.

All the guest lecturers who worked in the last academic year are being continued for this year also and their demands including a hike in payment, regularization of their services will be reviewed, he said.

He assured a fund of Rs 2 crore rupee for each of the government first-grade college and woman’s college located in the town.
