Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SB)

Beltangady, Feb 22: As readers are well aware, the horrific accident that took place at Beltangady last month claimed the lives of two of a family from Kadaba, including a newly-married man. The victims were returning from a visit to the Karkala-Attur pilgrim centre. The heart-breaking news had brought a pall of gloom on the entire district.

As reported, five people from the family who were returning from Karkala in their car collided with a Mahindra Bolero at Kadaba a few meters away from their house on January 24. Following the accident, Nicholas Martis, the head of the family, his son Naveen Martis, who was in the driving the vehicle, passed away in the mishap. Meanwhile, Cicilia Martis, Lavita Martis and Sushma Martis the other three members of the family survived and are currently recuperating in their brother Roshan Martis’s house who is an auto driver by profession.

Having lost breadwinners of the family, the injured are struggling to meet their medical costs and day-to-day expenses.

When the accident occurred at Kadaba, locals admitted the injured to Father Muller Hospital in Mangaluru. The hospital expenses at the time of releasing the bodies of the two deceased and shifting the other injured was over Rs 5 lac. To settle the medical bills, the relatives of the victims had to even borrow money.

Ever since they have been admitted to Father Muller Hospital, Cicilia, Lavita and Sushma have undergone critical surgeries and are being closely monitored. The treatment so far and for the next three months is likely to cost around Rs 3 lac. Further, given their delicate health conditions, the survivors will not be able to work for the next two years.

Lavita, who lost her husband Naveen in the accident only a few months after marriage, belongs to an economically weak family. She was critically injured in the accident. Now, after surgeries and close monitoring by the doctors, she is slowly recovering.

As the earning members of the family have lost their lives, there is no one to support the surviving family members. The accident, poverty and the burden of loans have made life miserable for these women. The accident has left a void in their life which is impossible to fill. The road to recovery is long, and having the additional burden of loans and bills can make it harder.

The distressed family is seeking help from kind-hearted individuals and donors to help them get over the tough times.

Daijiworld urges readers to support Cicilia, Lavita and Sushma during these difficult times in their life.

Insurance company will pay only after the amount is fixed by civil court, that will take long time. Immediate financial help for medical treatment and for the daily needs is need of the hour. Good initiative by Daijiworld. Heartfelt condolences to the family member.
