Mangaluru, Feb 28: A suo motu case has been registered by the police against 10 people over alleged illegal sand transporation after a truck was seized at Talapady near here late night on Saturday February 27.

The case has been registered against tipper truck driver Suraj, and others identified as Chandrahasa, Rakesh, Sanam and the owner of the truck.

Moreover, a case of obstructing the police from carrying out official duty has been registered against Ilyas, a resident of KC Road, and Rahim and three others for pushing and assaulting SI Chandra of Mangaluru South traffic police station. All of them escaped from the spot. They were allegedly escorting the sand truck in two cars.

City police commissioner Shashi Kumar and DCP Hariram Shankar were doing rounds near Talapady at around 3 am on an Activa scooter. They saw a tipper truck that was carrying illegal sand from Someshwar beach to Kerala and stopped it near KC Road.

However, without knowing that it was commissioner and DCP as they were not in uniform, the driver of the truck did not stop and went ahead of the police officers. The officers chased them and confiscated the truck near the tollgate.

Later, police personnel from Ullal police station were called and two cars, six bikes were confiscated and six people were taken into custody.
