Belagavi: Border dispute - KSRTC suspends service to Kolhapur after vandalization of buses

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (MS)

Belagavi, Mar 14: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on Saturday temporarily suspended its operations to Kolhapur in Maharashtra which has a substantial Kannada population in view of the ongoing border row between the two states, officials said.

Over the past couple of days, the tension increased with Shiv Sena activists smearing black ink on the name boards in Kannada and also damaging KSRTC buses. KSRTC has hence stopped plying buses to and fro Kolhapur.Passengers had to face hardship due the cancellation of bus services from both ends.

A few Maharashtra leaders have been demanding the merger of the regions dominated by Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka, especially Belagavi, which the pro-Kannada organisations have been opposing.

According to a senior officer in the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, a vehicle belonging to Maharashtra was blackened in Belagavi which aggravated the tension between the regions. "The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation officials had asked us if there was tension in Kolhapur and asked us not to run any buses. They too did not run any bus," the officer added.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut alleged that Marathi people residing in Karnataka's Belgaum were being victimised, and said an all-party delegation from Maharashtra should visit the city in the neighbouring State to resolve the ongoing stand-off.

He told reporters that in the last eight days there have been instances of attack on Shiv Sena leaders and the party's office in Belgaum by pro-Kannada outfits.

"Belgaum is part of India and the Maharashtra-Karnataka dispute is a language dispute. It shouldn't be stretched too far and this is the responsibility of the Karnataka government too," he said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has raised the issue of merger of Belagavi and other Marathi- dominated regions with Maharashtra time and again.

This idiot rawat is crossing all the limits, he thinks that he is head of all states and directing as if the land is owned by his father. As shiv Sena is losing the grip from Maharashtra, they want to engage public in these unwanted issues.

This has become a critical issue as each state is fighting and disputing with each other. After all all these states are Indian states and should be settled without any provocations. I hope I am right.

What has happened to our pride BEING AN INDIAN. That should be our first duty to be an Indian; only then we are Kannadigas and Marathis. What are we fighting for ... ownership of soil? It is not the Indian Soil either way? Common guys, put your pride for the country ahead of your personal grievances. If we are one, we are strong. Don't kill this nation in the name of language, region and religion. We are all one family. Jai Hind

Alfred dsouza, Mumbai, What a mind blowing comment? I have no words to express. Every word has a meaning in it. I too was brought up by my parents with my two sisters and one brother. They came all the way from Mangalore to Mumbai at that time Bombay and made their living holding good jobs and gave us goo education in good Catholic schools and also colleges. At that we had no problems whether you are from Bombay, Gujarat or any state. Now we are well settled in New York and enjoying our retired life but we can never forget Mumbai and India and we love India and visit as many times we can.

Its really unfortunate that Marathi chauvinists are targeting the shopkeepers just because Kannada too found a place in their boards, Sholapur being a border town, predominantly Kannada speaking too. Have we not allowed Malayalam boards in places like Virajpet in Kodaru, Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada, Marathi in places like Belagavi, Telugu in several places adjoining Telengana. Supreme Court should take up the case on its own and punish the miscreants.

This ugly, dirty politics, between my " Janmabhoomi " and " Karmabhoomi " is certainly appalling !! When BJP and Shiv Sena were in a state of martial bliss, sharing power and glory at the center n the state, such acrimony was never ever visualized !! But now after a bitter divorce, they have resurrected this decade old dispute, to rant and abuse each another... Believe me this is mere shadow boxing, to appease their respective vote lobbyists !!!

State Govts in the past have given free entry of Tamilnadu, Andhra and Kerala people into Bangalore. Ultimately this city will also become a language issue and claims will come from other states. Does it mean that Karnataka should tolerate such nuisance for ever? May be these migrants are their vote bank,

what do you mean state govt allowed ? U dont need a visa to enter karnataka, indian constitution allows indian citizens to relocate to any part of india. Its only the incompetence of the locals that they couldnt match the migrants skills and business acumen. They were just happy selling land. or renting out houses...
