Bangalore: Justice Majage Sworn in As Upa Lokayukta

Bangalore, Jul 19, (PTI): Retired Karnataka High Court Judge S B Majage was on Monday sworn as the state's Upa Lokayukta at a brief ceremony in Raj Bhavan here.

The Upa Lokayukta post had been lying vacant for seven months. Lokayukta Santosh Hegde had demanded that the post be filled up and was one of the conditions laid down by him for withdrawing his resignation from the post earlier this month.

Speaking at a function after taking over office, Majage said that he would work "within the ambit of law" and would make sincere and honest effort to check corruption.

He asked aggrieved persons to come forward and lodge complaints if they have been affected by corruption.

Majage described it as "a golden opportunity" given to him to serve people and said he would peruse through all pending files and try and redress grievances of people.

Speaking on the occasion, Hegde said that "it gave him great satisfaction to see that the Upa Lokayukta had been appointed".

The Lokayukta said that there were nearly 7,000 to 8,000 pending cases and nearly 3,500 cases ready to be cleared and awaiting the nod from the Upa Lokayukta.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said that the government as promised had filled in the vacancy of Upa Lokayukta and was confident that it would help strengthen the hands of the institution.

Appointment of Lokayukta and Upa Lokayukta, is just like icing on the cake and will not have any impact or benifit for the common man. When one corrupt person is caught the next one will take his place. And those caught will be out on bail, soon after.

What is needed is proto type of Lokayukta to probe into various organisations, working under the pretex of protecting the religions,& terror outfits in the form of student organisations, and the like, with powers to take immidiate action to ban them or render them inactive. By publicly displaying their names and photographs.

We see from the recent news clips that religious leaders can only condemn the incident, without having any power to ban or counter them.
    For example
    1. Pejawar Mutt Seer Worried over Hindu Terrorism.Speaking at the 70th birth anniversary of veteran leader M P Prakash, he said whether it is Islamic or Hindu terror, the act of terrorism should be condemned.

2.Mangalore Kazi Condemns Palm Chopping Incident.
Going through the readers comments on terrorism, barring a few, there is unanimity among the readers of all relgions to curb terrorism, irrespective of the banner under which they are operating.
If a common ground is established by like minded persons, to bring out a mechanism to identify and destroy terror outfits which are existing or soon after they are born, it will be a new chapter for the security of the citizens.

The Lokayukta said that there were nearly 7,000 to 8,000 pending cases and nearly 3,500 cases ready to be cleared and awaiting the nod from the Upa Lokayukta. Is Upa Lokayukta is higher than lokayukta? when Lokayukta himself is there what is need of nod from Upa Lokayukta  for the clearance of cases ?

Congratulation Justice Majage on your appointment. I am sure that you will do your best to bring the culprits to justice. But keep far away from Mr. Yeddy and be not a toy for him to play.

    Good luck

By looking at the faces of both Lokayukta and Upa Lokayukta we can easily differentiate between them. Lokayukta looks very nice and one can easily convince him by mere words, whereas, Upa Lokayukta is very serious and one can not meet him without prior appointment.

This post would have never filled, had Justice Hegde not resigned. I will not go on his looks as Langooracharya’s earlier advice as I also have studied in the same school that he has studied. I am optimistic that both Lokayuktha and Upa-Lokayuktha, can curb corruption to the minimum at least by publishing their name in the print media. By the way Langoo’s real name is Dancy.

After the recent Lokayukta drama in Karnataka, I was wondering why I do not hear anything about Lokayukta in other states. Is it because corruption is zero in other states ?

Can someone shed some light on this?

This is just an attempt to divert the attention of the general public from corruption cases which are pending and the voters are eagerly waiting for the result of mining cases.
