Mumbai, Jul 20: The Mumbai Crime Branch seized two 9 mm carbine machine guns, three magazines and 45 rounds of a 9mm gun from a secret underworld hideout in Mumbai on Sunday.
Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), said during a press conference on Monday that the weapons were procured in 2009 for underworld don Chhota Rajan.
“It is quite rare for underworld gangs to use such sophisticated weapons,” Mr. Roy said.
Information about the weapons was provided by an accused in the Farid Tanasha murder case during interrogation. All the 11 arrested in the murder of the gangster have been placed in police custody till July 26.
There are four accused in the weapons' seizure case — Chhota Rajan, Osama Khan, Abbas alias Zafar Raji Alam Khan, and Rajesh Yadav.
Chhota Rajan sent Rs.5 lakh to Abbas in 2009 to purchase the guns. Abbas contacted Rajesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh, who handed over the consignment to Abbas and Osama. They kept it at a secret location in Mumbai.
Mr. Roy said the weapons, usually used for large target groups, may be factory-made.
