Bantwal: Heavy rain on Sunday causes loss of several lacs; mother, daughter injured in lightning

Bantwal, Apr 13: Heavy rain, coupled with storm and lightning, here, on Sunday damaged several houses causing loss of several lacs.

Lightning has hit at two separate places. Geetha (29) and her daughter Rashmita (10) suffered injuries due to lightning at Barkata, Kavalapadoor village in the taluk. They have been admitted to Bantwal government hospital for treatment.

The house belonging to Lalita at Mitra Katta, Sajipamunnor gram was hit by lightning causing cracks on the walls and damaging the items in the house completely. The residential house of Muttamma, Bootalemaru, Shambhoor gram is damaged. The house of Sundara, Kartapalu in the same gram is also damaged. A coconut tree was uprooted and fell on the house of Chandappa Madivala at Madivalapadipu.

Several houses are damaged in the storm causing a total loss of more than Rs 15 lacs. While eight houses are severely damaged, 18 houses are partially damaged. A cowshed is damaged. Four crops are destroyed causing a loss of Rs 60 thousand, said revenue department officials.

Several trees were uprooted and about 60 light poles fell. Many light poles are damaged.

About ten light poles that fell across Bantwal – Moodbidri road disrupted traffic. Vehicles were made to proceed via an alternative route till the roads were cleared of debris in the evening. Mescom suffered a loss of about Rs 60 lacs due to the storm. Mescom linemen and engineers came to the spot from Sunday night and worked tirelessly to complete HT linework and provided electricity by Monday night.
