Udupi, Apr 14: “Dr B R Ambedkar has included several things in the constitution for social and educational equality in the country. The people in the country should remember him every day for his suggestions to strengthen democracy in the country,” said state backward class commission president K Jayaprakash Hegde.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 130th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar at Rajatadri auditorium on Wednesday.
“The suggestions by Ambedkar to strengthen democracy are valuable. Society should remember the rights provided to every citizen and make the creation of the constitution and the democracy effective,” he said.
MLA Raghupathi Bhat who presided over the programme said a decision to name the main circle in the city is taken after discussions. “A park is being constructed at a cost of Rs 50 lac around Ambedkar statue at Rajathadri. His thinking should be reached to the next generation,” he said.
Byndoor Pre-University College lecturer Dr Pradeep Kenchanoor said that Ambedkar had the basic intention of equality, freedom and fraternity. “Everybody in the society should live a life of brotherhood with human values following the aspirations in the constitution in the daily lives,” he said.
The statue of Ambedkar at deputy commissioner complex was garlanded before the programme.
District panchayat president Dinaker Babu, vice-president Sheela K Shetty, coastal development authority president Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, taluk panchayat president Sandhya Kamath, municipal council president Sumitra R Nayak, urban development authority president Raghavendra Kini, district panchayat member Shilpa Suvarna, deputy commissioner G Jagadeesh, district panchayat CEO Dr Navin Bhat, SP Vishnuvardhan, additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu, corporation commissioner Dr Udaya Shetty were present.
Cash was distributed to the beneficiaries of various schemes of the social welfare department. Koraga community presented Dollu dance and Ganesh Gangolli and the troupe sang Ambedkar songs.
Social welfare department deputy director Anita V Madloor welcomed the gathering. Taluk social welfare officer Ramesh rendered a vote of thanks.
