Covid-19 patients are looked after by their family members at Wenlock, alleges AC Vinayaraj

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 1: In a serious allegation, Mangaluru City Corporation opposition party leader A C Vinayaraj on Saturday May 1 alleged that the authorities in Wenlock district hospital are asking the family members of Covid-19 patients to stay and look after the patient.

He said that the issue came light when he visited the hospital following a complaint. “A woman who was looking after her parents has complained that she was made to look after her parents who were infected by the Covid-19 in the hospital. The district administration should take this issue very seriously. Why MP Nalin Kumar Kateel or MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath have not inspected the situation by going into the hospital? Are they escaping from their responsibility?

“On Friday April 30, a 74-year-old woman was admitted to Covid block in 'B' ward of Wenlock hospital. Then the duty doctor had asked her daughter-in-law to assist the Covid patient. Who is responsible if the woman's daughter-in-law infected by the virus? The hospital authority never allowed her daughter-in-law to come out of the hospital which is against the law. As per information, there were 6 Covid-19 patients in the ward and even they were looked after by their family members. The Congress party demands proper action against those who have violated the law. BJP has failed in controlling the Covid-19 situation and providing treatment for the patients.

“How the Covid chain can be broken when non-infected people are looking after the Covid-19 patients?” he questioned.

If there is shortage of staff and the elderly needs care the doctor in the dept. has atleast done his moral duty by requesting a family member to look after rather than leaving the patient unattended. The situation is such each of us are responsible for our own. The present govt has failed to perform their duties.

Do you think that by employing permanent and temporary basis this problem is going to solve? Once you employ a government servant on permanent basis job security will come in the way of performance. When you employ on temporary or contract basis permanent employees will resist such move. Lower the grade more of such problem. May be what Wenlock is doing now is the best option for the time being. Otherwise we have heard of so many stories where Covid patients are asked to fend for themselves.

There is scarcity of doctors, nurses and para medics, compared to the number of patients. Instead of leaving the patient unattended, due to lack of attendends, it is wiser, if you care for your people, to be there in hospital. Doctors are helpless too. Anyway, these people stayed together, all along, may be they will get immunity. If they care for their loved ones...
