Bantwal, Aug 12: The policemen of Vittal station said that Sukumar, assistant sub-inspector of Kadri police station, was injured after the people, who gathered in large numbers in front of a bakery that had been visited by the policemen to arrest its owner, assaulted the police team.

Reportedly, the owner of Bindas Bakery in Kanyana near Vittal, is one of the accused in a case pertaining to injuring a child with a sharp weapon in Mangalore. The policemen of Kadri had visited Kanyana to arrest the owner of the bakery, who has an old case pending against him, on Wednesday August 11. Salim (29), brother of the bakery owner, who was at the shop at the time, thwarted the policemen’s efforts to arrest his brother. In momentary frenzy, he shattered a bottle found in the bakery and stabbed himself with the broken bottle. He was immediately rushed to Puttur hospital with grave injuries to his neck.

As the word spread that the policemen had assaulted the bakery owners, people gathered in front of the bakery in large numbers and assaulted the policemen. Sukumar is recovering in Vittal hospital, the policemen said. Vittal sub-inspector of police, Rakshit, rushed the spot immediately and dispersed the crowd. Bantwal circle inspector, Nanjunde Gowda, also went to Vittal with additional reinforcements. For some time, tension had gripped Kanyana village.
