Bengaluru: Bed blocking - Another arrested, HC seeks supervision of IPS officer

Bengaluru, May 13: Relating to the bed blocking scandal, Anthony (34), marketing representative of Saptagiri Hospital, was arrested by the policemen of the central crime division on Wednesday May 12. With this, the number of arrests in the case has risen to eight.

Two other accused, who have tested positive for coronavirus, are in home quarantine. It is said that Anthony used to block the beds in the names of people in home isolation and then charged Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per bed as per their investigation, the police said.

IPS supervision

The state high court has said that the central crime branch investigation into the bed blocking scandal said to have been executed through the war room of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, has to be supervised by a senior and experienced IPS officer.

A division bench of the high court headed by Chief Justice A S Oka and Justice Aravind Kumar has been handling several public interest litigations filed relating to the Covid management and treatment.

During the hearing, additional advocate general, R Subrahmanya, handed over the preliminary investigation report of the central crime branch in a sealed cover. He also said that eight persons including a doctor have been arrested in this regard. The bench which went through the report, commented that the points mentioned in the report reveal that this is a very serious and sensitive case. Therefore, it asked for the formation of a team of experts in cyber technology and that this team should work to support the investigating staff. It adjourned the hearing after instructing the government to inform its response to both these issues.
