Bengaluru: Liquor business in Karnataka not affected under lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 15: Though lockdown is imposed in the state due to the rise of a second wave of infections of coronavirus, it seems that this has not made any difference to the liquor lovers of the state. The liquor business is running as usual.

Liquor shops are allowed to open from 6 am to 10 am only. The average sale during lockdown period is 1.6 lac boxes. During the non-lockdown period it was 1.7 lac boxes. This means that there is not much fall in the demand for liquor. One box of IMFL liquor consists of 8.64 litres and one box of beer contains 7.8 litres.

During normal days, the excise department used to earn an income of Rs 65 crore per day. Now it has come down marginally to Rs 55 to 58 crore. The main reason for this fall is the closure of pubs, bars and restaurants.

Speaking to the scribes, excise minister Gopaliah said, “Last year during the first lock down, we had closed all liquor shops for 53 days. Then there was a huge crowd outside the wine shops when they opened in May 2020. This is not right as crowding of people will cause more spreading of coronavirus. So this time around we have given four hours of time for liquor business. This will ease the crowd. Once the situation returns to normal, we will allow liquor shops to function as usual.”

The minister also said that for the fiscal 2020-21 state excise department had a target of Rs 22,700 crore of revenue. That is accomplished. This year the target is Rs 24,580 crore. Our department officials are striving hard to reach this target.

This government is promoting liquor business to stop the deadly disease. That's why it is not interested in providing any infrastructure to the patients in our state. Nowhere vaccines are available but liquor stores are open early morning at 6.00a.m.without fail. This is called achche din under godhi government. Has any body in government has self respect and prudent brains.

Central government should increase the tax of liquor, cigerates and luxury items. Should make zero tax for medicines and grocery items.

This shows people (every state) have enough money for liquor and no money for medical treatment. Surprisingly in this critical situation also there is absolutely no shortage of liquor stock. Devare Gathi.

Its a known fact to everyone of us that drug and alcohol addiction causes a person to forget what it is like to be hungry, and instead think of this feeling as a drug craving . He can become violent or kill for money to fullfill his desire.

This data is definitely fudged; with lacs of migrants, having lost their jobs with no money to eat, who were the majority customers for booze having fled to their villages with empty pockets, this data seems to be dubious! A report in another site says there are about 4k+ migrant laborers with no jobs, only in Mangalore city who have been reduced to beggary for food & shelter, how will they buy booze?

Lockdown very effective, liquor business booming. Good signs of economic recovery. Hope govt understands food and livelihood is more important than liquor.

It's due to people who unable to digest debacle of congress party in five rajya (state) are drowning continuously in confusion and in state of anguishness. Incha aanda eencha..!! On each and every election people sideline congress party and are looking for alternative option. Now no room left even to blame on leadership..only see veterans on dais in some occassions only. Due to its efforts BJP made inroad in West Bengal, Pudcherry, Assam gaining more share of votes each year. Its learned that bjp people are cut down intake of liquor much and are concenrating much on developmental work for future of nation. Really Great indeed.

Vicky: thank those people who you call as Congress men drowning their sorrow for their loss in five states, if it was not for those people who buy liquor and boost the economy of your state had it not be them than wonder what would have been the condition of Karnataka. This is the first state I, have seen that opens liquor shop during lockdown but have shut down all other business.

A beggar one day, stood in front of a temple saying "Bhagwan ka naam par paisa dede" and he could collect only some coins. In the evening, he stood in front of a bar saying the same thing. People coming out of the bar in high spirits, doled out to him in notes. Happy with the collection, he said to himself. "Bhagwan, your greatness, I cannot measure. You give one address and live somewhere else". (appeared in Reader's Digest)

Really interesting. Government tells Liquor business has not affected in Karnataka. Corona has affected . This shows Government gave priority for Liquor sales being their first priority in getting Revenue. Right now Corona cases and Liquor sales is increasing.

Prabhu, you said "only for your people". Okay, I am not disturbed, because % wise our people may be drinking more than your people. But, let me explain the true fact in India. We are only 2.5% and you are 81%. Look at the scenario of Ganeshotsav, Holi and Navaratri, liquor is purchased by your people and organisers, in crates and not in bottles like our people. During election, your people distribute lorry loads of liquor to which people ? A Mr. Poojary, having a large liquor shop told me, "the day Hindus stop drinking, I have to close my liquor shop".
