Kundapur, May 20: “People in the state are devastated by the Covid-19 second wave. Covid infected patients at several places are not getting medical facilities, ventilators, beds, oxygen and suitable treatment and are losing their lives,” stated Congress block president Kanmakki Hariprasad Shetty in a press release.
“It is worrying that more than a thousand cases of Covid infected get registered in Udupi every day and the numbers of deaths also have increased. The numbers of infected people in villages also are on the rise. The home quarantine and containment zones of the first wave have disappeared.
“There are facilities for home isolation. Therefore, some infected are going about as they like and spreading the virus to their house members and the surroundings.
“The situation has gone out of hand. Many are infected after participating in wedding celebrations and gatherings during April and May. Therefore, curfew should be strictly enforced. Gatherings should be banned and the purchase of essential commodities should be permitted only for a short duration. Traffic should be completely banned.
“Very few people wear masks in villages. The virus has spread to the villages. Therefore, the government should recruit additional staff in primary health centres and ensure that medical facilities are available round the clock.
“The people's representatives showed enthusiasm in the beginning but lacked interest when the situation became serious. The covid hospitals are making patients buy some medicines from outside as those are not available in the hospitals. Gram panchayat and task forces should work hand in hand. District panchayat chief executive has failed in it. Failure by the government and district administration to take suitable decisions on time caused this much suffering and deaths. Work for the people at least to pay the debt of people having elected BJP,” he urged.
