Mangaluru, May 21: Mayor Premananda Shetty on Friday May 21 urged the public residing under the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to segregate dry and wet waste, before it is handed over to the civic workers or during the door-to-door collection.

Speaking in a press meet here at the MCC, the mayor said, "People should cooperate with MCC in scientific disposal of solid waste, and segregate dry and wet waste. This will help in solid waste processing. Scientific segregation of the waste should be done compulsorily.

“A few of the civic workers are infected by Covid-19 virus as they involve in the segregation of waste. Hence, keeping the health of civic workers in mind and scientific disposal of waste, it is the responsibility of people, to segregate waste before handing it over to the civic workers. It is essential for the MCC to take proper steps to effectively implement the scientific disposal of waste.

"The bio-medical waste from the quarantine and isolation houses will be disposed as per the guidelines of the health department, state, and union governments.

“To contain the spread of Covid-19, the MCC has formed a task force taking all corporators into confidence. For each ward, officials from the MCC have been appointed as nodal officers. The ward committee task force will identify the primary and the secondary contacts of Covid-19 patients and provide treatment to them. The MCC has also started a mobile swab collection team. The patients who are in home isolation are being provided with home isolation health kit which consists zinc, vitamin, and other essential medicines.

“Five Indira canteens under the limits of MCC is providing free breakfast, lunch and dinner,” he said.

MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar said, “It is a request from the MCC. People should cooperate in the scientific disposal of waste to keep our environment clean. Through this, we can also prevent the tragedy which took place in 2019. If the public fails to adhere to the guidelines, a fine from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25000 will be slapped on the violators. In case of any complaints, public may contact helpline number 155313 and 9449007722 (WhatsApp).

An appeal is pointless. Start incentivising composting in compounds of independent houses and buildings. Set up wet and dry waste brings every few hundred feet all over the city. Force restaurants in the district to use eco friendly packaging. Initiate clean up drives (I know a lot of waste is just dumped on the roads around the airport) N most essentially don’t dump wet n dry waste into the same truck, waste is segregatted to wet dry sanitary electronic and coconut shells n then dumped in the same overflowing truck..

Waste has to be segregated at source, there should be no issue about it. People need to take some responsibility before expecting better from the corporation. The problem I have is with wet waste disposal. Why should the workers handle uncovered wet waste?. Wet waste should be collected in biodegradable garbage bags. Besides there's no fixed time for garbage collection and even otherwise it is unreasonable to expect resident's to wait and personally hand over waste to the worker. That's simply ridiculous.

Very sad that people do not have time to segregate the waste generated within their houses. They have time for entertainment and external beautification. Sanitary waste and other waste are often mixed with kitchen waste. If one cannot separate waste is it possible to sort the garbage of the entire city? Many are selfish and never think that they have a social responsibility. With the natural calamities happening, it’s time for all to change themselves. Let us not ask what others can do but what “I” can do to protect our environment by doing our duty. God has given us life and will question us if we have done our duty. This earth is not given to us alone but for generations to come. Please spare some time in keeping dry waste and give it only once a week. Live and let live for safety of all living beings.

While many people here find difficult to segregate waste.. I feel it is never a difficult thing.. you just have to keep a separate reusable plastic container and put all your wet waste in it.. give it to the garbage collector.. please do not put wet waste inside black disposable garbage plastic bags..... And about dry waste put all the paper and plastics in a big dustbin.. if there are any food packets which come in plastic packages please empty the food into the wet waste and wash the plastic package and put it in dry waste bin.... Dry waste does not smell .. you can keep it at least for a week and hand it over to the garbage collector.... When the world is facing too many problems because of covid-19, we must understand that in future our children will suffer more because of our habits of not segregating waste... If you do not separate waste all that the municipality can do is dump it in some place creating problems for The villagers......... The people who have commented here must change their perspective towards waste.. and believe in ' my waste my responsibility' .... Why must others suffer because of the waste that you generate? The least you can do for the environment is separating the dry n wet waste... And I do not find fault in in mayor asking us to do so..........

It is really difficult to manage with this new system, where are the local garbage bins if people want to throw the waste on the way. Why have they all vanished? Can’t the municipality just make two bins one dry and one wet in every locality? Only if this is implemented then the hygiene standards can increase. We have only faced challenges now that it’s a door to door collection

It is better to place large bins at specific Places in the locality for dry & wet waste & Keep personal to monitor how the public Uses them. See that an arrangement is made Such that the filled bins can be mechanically Lifted and fresh bins replaced. Take stringent Action against those who violate the rules in Case they're found dumping garbage in other Places

it is better to have only wet waste on all days except Sundays... sundays only dry waste... i.e. that is houses should collect and keep dry waste for the week and hand over only on Sunday... other days they should hand - over only wet waste (because wet waste cannot be retained in house)....

The old method of a large bin, at specific locations, with modification would be better according to me.Have 2 big bins one for dry and one for wet waste, and a person to monitor that citizens put the garbage in the correct bin( for the initial few months). This would be much easier and cleaner for MCC to collect and convenient for citizens to dispose waste at their convenience, rather than wait for the house to house collectors. It would be much cheaper, safer also as less manpower would be required. The extra people can be redeployed for brooming the streets which is not seen in many areas at present.Seperators on conveyer belts can remove any remaining unsegregated material before recycling.
