Udupi, May 22: Ramesh Kanchan, opposition leader of city municipality, in a press release said that the state government has cheated the fisherfolk by not announcing any Covid relief package.
In the press release Kanchan said, “State BJP government has used the fishermen community as their vote bank in every election. However, during this difficult time of the coronavirus pandemic, it has completely ignored the community and cheated the faith of this community who voted for them.
“The families of fishermen are suffering due to the lockdown as they are not allowed to go fishing. The fishermen community has played the main part in sending BJP MPs from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada to the parliament as well as 12 out of 13 MLAs in twin districts.
“Though the state has sent 25 BJP MPs from Karnataka, the union government is continuously showing step-motherly attitude. Tauktae cyclone had created a lot of destruction in the coastal region of Karnataka. However, PM Modi has declared Rs 1,000 crore relief only to the state of Gujarat. This is really painful and shows the partisan attitude of the union government. Minister Ashok who had come to assess the damage made by Cyclone Tauktae at Maravanthe has not listened to the woes. Locals have expressed their anger against the minister as well as the state BJP government.
“People representatives of our village are not questioning the discrimination meted out to the twin districts by the state government. People of both districts are going to teach them a fitting lesson in the coming elections.”
