Mangaluru, May 31: There is lot of demand for Covaxin vaccine in Dakshina Kannada district. Those who had obtained first dose of the vaccine have been waiting impatiently for the second dose of this vaccine, as the people have been advised to get the second dose of Covaxin after six weeks unlike Covishield vaccine where the gap has been changed to 12 weeks.
Huge rush of people who want to get themselves vaccinated was seen at Bejai Kapikad government school from early morning on Monday May 31.
The policemen on duty tried to bring some semblance of order to the proceedings. Many in the queue complained that they have been waiting in the queue from 5 am but that only a limited number of tokens have been issued, that too at per the whims and fancies of the organizers. Some also complained of favouritism on the part of the concerned in the issuance of tokens.
The large crowd expressed its anger for not receiving vaccine. As per the statement issued, first dose of Covishield will be provided to people aged over 45 years at all health centres. Since 6 am, people queued up in front of the school where vaccines were being administered.
Only 300 doses were available out of which 100 are allotted for frontline workers.
Some of the senior citizens vented their anger at the staff for the confusion and making them wait for an hour when tokens were not available.
Metilda, a senior citizen said, “We are senior citizens and waiting here for vaccination for hours. Unfortunately, we are not receiving vaccines in the centers. Rich people easily get the same. What about us? At least they could give us the token and arrange a systematic method to administer the vaccines.”
“Are we jobless to wait for hours and return home without receiving the vaccine? It is better to make some systematic arrangement,” said another person who was languishing at the centre.
The people are anxious as Covaxin dose is received very sparingly and they are not sure when the next consignment will be received.
