Udupi: 70-year-old woman dies by suicide at taluk office

Udupi, Jun 5: A woman ended her life here by jumping off a building. The incident took place in heart of the city near the taluk office on Saturday June 5.

The deceased is identified as Gangamma (70). She jumped off the 7th floor of the building.

It is said that the woman was tested positive for Covid19 a few days ago and had recovered. Her husband was also undergoing treatment for the same in the hospital.

Sources said that the family is originally from Chitradurga district. The son of the deceased is working in a bank in Udupi.

A case is registered at Udupi town police station.

    IMHO, testing should only be done on people who show classical symptoms as the present test efficacy is said to be between 65-70% thus giving wrong results; moreover the final results depends on a number of factors other than accuracy of the kits! Most people, due to the extreme phobia, who perish might be half dead due to sudden mental shock when they get a positive report!

    Agree Suicide is never a solution, but if we delve deeper into the causes, we will find that most of the suicides happen due to the mental depression. From the concept of Cluster family, we have rapidly moved to Nuclear family system and many people especially elderly are not able to cope up with these changes. They feel lonely within family and socially isolated. This social disintegration is one of the major reasons for depression which many a times leads to suicides. The number of people attempting suicides are said to be ten times the number of deaths due to suicides. Each one of us can play a positive role in our society. If we just look around our place, we will definitely come across someone who may be feeling isolated. Just say Hi to them once in a while... It will create a sense of they being wanted and valued by the society..... Let us do whatever little bit which we can do, instead of being ostriches and blaming someone's unknown previous birth

    Dear Mr. Ajay, 'Hi' is never a solution.... What I meant was instead of finding fault with the victim, let us understand that as a society it is our collective responsibility to prevent suicides. Being an active member of Pain and Palliative care societies where we interact with elderly people, we know very well how even a 'Hi' makes a difference in their lives who always have an overwhelming sense of ennui. If someone can do something beyond 'Hi' all the more better. Sadly we all concentrate more on physical health than mental health. Even our public health systems needs change and our Government hospitals should have Psychiatrists, Geriatricians etc. proposal already sent to Kerala Government for having affordable mental health care systems

    Extreme phobia has been created around the illness and also fear of ostracization makes individuals and families go into severe depression, which leads to suicide! Branding of people who are infected with huge posters on their walls, treating them as untouchables, should be done away with or one will see a spate of such unfortunate incidents! IMHO, the infection has spread in the community throughout the country??

    What's written by God Almighty while child in mother's womb cannot be changed. We do not know what wrong done by elderely woman in last birth for taking such drastic step.

    Dlshad Thokkottu ,before we discuss about our previous life or something else,please understand that this woman had corona and was cured ,came home.Her husband also is infected with corona.She must have felt so lonely ,aged noone was there to help her.second when people come home after corona cured,life is not like before.Many complain about problems not to function like before.some forget ,cant speak fluently,have problems to walk ,.depression is ther,So she must have felt very lonely Everything was too much for her.sometimes neighours also dont contact out of fear.Sad .May her soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to her family.Here there are facilities from health insurance ,for people who are effected from Corona very badly to go for a rehabilitation .
