Mangaluru: Compound wall of apartment building collapses, many vehicles damaged

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 5: The compound wall of the huge apartment building which is built unscientifically near Classique Arcade on K S Rao road in the city collapsed due to heavy rain of overnight on Saturday June 5.

Many vehicles that were parked on the basement were badly damaged. Five vehicles owned by a TV channel were completely damaged. Huge LED screens, computers, laptops and other costly electronics goods were kept inside these vehicles. They are also damaged beyond recovery. The loss is estimated to run into several lac.

Locals had already protested and filed a complaint against the apartment building near Classique Arcade alleging that the building is constructed in an unscientific manner. The retaining wall work was not done properly. There is no drainage for the water to flow in case of heavy rains. On Earlier occasions also water logging was noticed in this building on the basement and the water had entered some flats in ground floor also. Now the collapse of the retaining wall has caused considerable damage to vehicles and property.

A complaint is filed with Bunder police station in this regard. Fire service personnel vacated the damaged and other vehicles stuck in the basement. Mayor of MCC Premanand Shetty and president of MUDA Ravishankar Mizar visited the spot and assessed the damage done.

The concerned retaining wall that has collapsed and cause the damage isn't of the new building that everyone here is blaming but is actually the compound wall of the Classique building. Like someone rightly said in the comments, apart of the retaining wall had collapsed a few years ago and it was actually built and given by the new building that is here in question. Also at that time they were informed that another section of the wall is weak and there are chances of collapse which was totally ignored upon till this incident happened and now all the blaming begins. Not all builders are cheats and not every building is a scam. The new building here in question was actually a project that went into a halt and the current owner finished it and finished it well. Mostly the owners of apartments in this new building are abroad and such mis information creates a ruckus in their mind specially in these difficult times.

First of all when the foundation was digging I met MCC Development Officer Mr B Gowda and asked Him who gave the Permit to build this structure by Blocking the view of Arabian Sea from Light House Park. He sent me to then MCC Commissioner whom I met where got a useless answer. Then I Met Mayor who acted like Gomatesh Statue from Karkal. I also raised the issue with Attorney who lives next to this building.. Originally this land was belong to my relatives-Monteiro family. Just 2 years back part of the wall collapsed. Now this is the second incident where Major Collapse happened. The next incident will be GOD only will know what will collapse next. I would not take a chance to live inside that building nor walk near it. When We were young Students at St Aloysius, we spent time watching Ships floating in Arabian Sea from this Park. And now the Students will watch collapsed wall with vehicles buried. If this carries on Public may see dead Human from this structure.

Forget about this building. First of all Design or planning of Mangalore city itself is not proper.....Big cities are often built in flat lands. Even tall buildings are developed on Flat areas with planned roads with blocks and mains square roads. Why many other cities with low literacy are well planned and city like Mangalore filled with Engineers and doctors is not planned well??....Engineering should be studied not just to get jobs...should have some mind to contribute to hometown and surrounding around us. Mangalore is beautiful waterfront city..Identify flat lands and build sea facing buildings rather than on some hilly or uneven surfces

Very bad situation for all.If these vehicles and all instruments regarding camaras etc having any insurance, then Insurance might pay I believe. But now comes People who live in this buildings are in danger I feel. Now basement is not secure,Collapsed due to rain ,when basement is not secure ,and height and weight of these apartments may bring it again to give off underneath .How old are these apartments and any security and garantie?wall looks like built only with mud?Looks like children building during their play in sand.Did any officials checked after building was finished before it was let free for living ?without water drain at sides ?

Builders keep approaching us asking for a joint venture and want to demolish houses, cut trees and construct huge buildings of cheap quality. People are promised flats and parking and they give way to their crooked plans. Finally there is soil erosion and landslides. Due to economical crisis many buildings are not sold n still many are vacant as buyers are abroad. It's high time we retain our traditional homes and plant more trees. Or soon mangalore will have a disaster like coorg. Only difference is that here buildings will collapse.

One of the biggest blunders is permitting to build the apartment in from of well-known Tagore park. First put behind the bar, who gave the permission and signed the document to build the flat. I emphasize again, please find that culprit

Similar retaining wall collapse had occurred 2-3 years back at the same spot . Obviously nothing was done to reinforce it . Again luckily this time no casualties. The classique building apartment people in front will have sleepless nights. It’s like a manmade earthquake waiting to happen again unless immediate steps are taken

The landslide as we can see from the photographs shown will most likely have impact on that adjacent buildings? Is it safe for the occupants of those apartment people?

Such disasters are waiting to happen at Mangalooru. Unscientific layout and construction. Many basements of commercial shopping complexes have been converted to shops, heavy rains will be death trap to such buildings.
