Mangaluru: Man withdraws Rs 3.77 lac from dead Covid patient's debit card, case filed

Mangaluru, Jun 6: The pandemic seems to have become an opportunity to make a quick buck for fraudsters. After the case of theft of a mobile phone from Covid ward in Madikeri a few days ago, there is now a case of lacs of rupees disappearing from the account of a person who died due to Covid.

A person who was hospitalized due to coronavirus has been duped of Rs 3.77 lac by a fraudster who allegedly stole his debit card.

It is said that Vivian Sequeira was admitted to a hospital in the city as he was infected with Covid-19. A man identified as Faizar was taking care of Vivian at the hospital.

Sadly on May 18, Vivian Sequeira succumbed to the infection.

According to the complaint filed by Vivian's wife Rovena Sequeira, Faizar fraudulently withdrew Rs 3.77 lac cash after allegedly stealing Vivian's debit card.

A case in this connection has been registered in the Kankanady police station and investigation is on.

    This is for Shasikumar Shetty Santhoor: Please show some respect and decency to the deceased and his family. the daughters were abroad and they could not come, the spouse was also admitted for Covid 19 positive.     Why we are creating our own stories and judging either side? Let police do their job. However if Mrs. Vivian knows who is faizar then she must be having more details about him. And during this lockdown he can't travel much or flee out of the country. Quick action by police can reveal everything.

    You people have no opinion or authority to talk about this in any way. The daughters were abroad. The wife was in a separate ward also positive . There is all the proof and evidence and they found that this boy was indeed guilty .This story is posted here not for your unnecessary comments but to understand that caretakers can take advantage and that we all need to be careful. Don’t you dare judge a family when you don’t even know the whole story. Shame on you!!

    I feel its wrong to be judgement without knowing the real situation. The daughter was providing Financial support by working abroad... the mother being Covid Positive herself and was hospitalized and so couldn't be of help to her husband... therefore it is inevitable for a caretaker had to be hired.. for round the clock assistance. I don’t see anything wrong on the family’s part. As it is Covid is difficult to deal with. I personally know of many people who have succumbed to Covid, so its not an easy time for anyone. The least you can do is empathize with the family in their moment of grief and refrain from such insensitive remarks.

    I have my doubt here. My office assistant know my ATM pin and let me put Fizar in the same shoe. Fizar might have withdrawn the cash to pay to hospital with the knowledge and instruction of the deceased patient. When the patient died his family might have made Fizar a scape goat. Let’s think like this before making anyone a culprit - because Fizar had actually took care of the patient when he needed as per this news article. .

    RIP madam. Fizar is a good name for a fraudster to use. Anyway friends and relatives please ensure that in case of death of parent of minor please ensure covid is mentioned in death certificate for compensation.

    One primary job we must do upon death of a person is, inform the bank/s in whichever he/she held accounts. The accounts get shut for any operation till the death is registered, certificate obtained and next kin appointed for carrying out any legal formalities. Even if a family member withdraws money from the diseased's account before such procedure, it becomes liable for penalties. Similar punishment applies to the man in this news too, besides punishment for fraud.
