Mumbai, Jun 12: In a shocking incident that is reported from the commercial capital of the country, a nanny, native of Bambilapadavu in Bantwal taluk, was arrested by the police on the accusation of ill-treating a new-born baby.

As per the details emerging prestigious Serrao family of Mangaluru origin, residing at Vashi of Navi Mumbai was expecting the arrival of the baby in their family. The family was overwhelmed with joy as this was the first baby in the affluent family. After having Caesarean delivery, the baby was brought home. As per the plan, Irene Vas, native of Bambilapadavu in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district was recruited as the nanny to take care of the baby as well as the nursing mother.

For one week after the arrival of the baby and nursing mother everything was fine. After a week the baby started crying suddenly every now and then. The elderly granny of the newborn advised to give gripe water. But the baby would not stop crying. Parents, who were distraught by the pain the baby was going through, took the baby to the paediatrician. The doctor who examined the baby was shocked to see the blood clots in hands and legs of the baby as well as the swelling in the legs. After treating the baby, the paediatrician advised the family to monitor the movement of the nanny. The family duly fixed CCTV in the house without the knowledge of nanny.

The CCTV camera revealed the demonic act of Irene. The family members were shocked to see Irene beating and twisting the hands, legs, neck and head of the baby in order to put it to sleep. They duly got her arrested by the police after providing incriminating evidence captured on CCTV.

The family doctor who suspected the behaviour of nanny was absolutely right. Sub-inspector Reshma B Momin, station inspector of Vashi police station investigated the whole incident and filed charge sheet in the court. Irene, who was in police custody, is released on conditional bail and stays in her relative’s house in Malad. She has to attend the police station every day.

The usual nanny, who had taken care of around seven to eight babies in the Serrao household, was not available as she had taken the responsibility of nursing some other new-born. So she recommended Irene to the family. Irene, wife of Maxim Vincent Lasrado, had agreed for a monthly sum of Rs 50,000 to take care of the baby saying that she is an expert in the job. She was given accommodation in the posh bungalow of the Serraos at Vashi also. Now she is caught red handed and police are monitoring her movements.

However she wanted to rule our home and she did not take good care of our new born, she used to get angry if we asked her help and she used to blackmail us often. My wife despite having stitches she would do all the works of new born and also take care of my elder daughter. I still remember an instance where she created a huge mess in our family with her crocodile tears stating that my wife had spoken very rudely to her. She used to treat our new born badly as well, whenever she was asked to take care of a sleeping child within no minutes our new born used to weep out of sleep(this used to happen in the afternoon and not at nights). I wish I had taken my wife's advice and suggestion, justice well served. Just wonder who helped her to get a conditional bail, I pity the one who helped her to get a bail and as well as I pity them who have sympathies with her. I hope she rots in jail.

Why hire a nanny? Get a maid instead to help with the household chores while the parents and grandparents take care of the newborn. Men in the family should set aside inhibitions (to hell with social norms) and get involved as well. A newborn is going to bring a lot of happiness to the household for years to come; take the lead in caring for your baby. Nannies/maids/helpers should just play the supporting role (if required). Most importantly, plan for parenthood only if you are prepared to take lead and share the responsibility amongst yourself. I found it manageable from my personal experience (Fully understanding some family situations may have exceptions). Kids are really survivors of abuse by the so called nannies (most cases). They just make it through with gods grace. Only pain a newborn should encounter after birth is the little needle pricks from vaccinations :)

Reading the news shocked me that anyone could be so cruel to an infant so small. Contacted the father of the child. I know the whole family for the past 37 years and they are such genuine, God fearing family who come to the aid of the needy without any show and without any publicity. They would surely be generous with the nanny in question too. They trusted this woman without doubt. The baby was born on 17th April and on 29th April, the infant already had blood clots on legs and hands besides having a fractured hand. I can't even imagine the pain the child suffered and how much more the parents and grand parents must have suffered. Hope this nanny would be blacklisted and not sponsored in future by anyone.

Good faith, trust, reliable introduction, sweet and highly knowledge of baby's and mother's care taking talk of the nanny lady, we accept these type devil nanny's and land in problems. After situation goes out of hand agents wash their hands with all excuses as they have not personaly seen them at all. While negotiating contract for month/40 days is not less than Rs. 60,000/-. Plus ticket n perks. I have too bab experienced similar situation and returned the lady next 5 days from Mumbai to udupi. Never depend on sweet talk without knowing.

A newborn, particularly the first one, is a matter of great joy for any family and even for the close relatives..... A family with a new-born would normally go that extra mile to take care of the baby..... Normally we call upon our close relatives than an unknown lady..... Even if one appoints a lady, no mother would leave the child to be completely taken care by the nurse..... Also the fact that mother did not come to know about the child’s swelling and clot is something beyond comprehension..... The lady supposedly suggested gripe water and the parents gave, whether the gripe water can be suggested to new born less than 3 weeks needs to be verified.... The article states parents were distraught by the baby’s continuous crying, such distraught parents would immediately keep a close watch first and prevent hurt to the child rather than installing CCTV and monitoring it.... The time they would have spent in monitoring CCTV, they could have spent with their newborn..... Fully agree with many of the comments, which suggests about the parent’s responsibility in the matter.

I had hired her for 40 days for my second delivery for 50,000. She was horrible. Within a week I had a blood clot on my leg and I couldn't move. Doctor had said it could be because of the massage or because of the C-section. Since we were not sure, we couldn't accuse her. However, I had stopped her massage. Usually, balti lady talk, sing or atleast smile at the baby.She behaved very badly with the baby. She used to get angry when the baby passed motion. She used to make the child howl and cry for milk or cleaning her potty. She was bad to my elder son too. She never gave him any of the breakfast she prepared for me even though there were leftovers. I had to bear with this behavior because I couldn't move. With God's grace, I was healed of my leg clot before the babys christening and we couldn't wait for her to go.

Parents who appoint new one entirely unknown a Nanny should strictly keep eye on her. It is their duty. It is wisdom. One never know who she is. On what background she coming. Once I was coming from Dubai To Mangalore and one family at the Dubai airport smiled at me, since it’s a courtesy I too smiled back and they requested me whether I can take care of an uneducated nanny whom they have hired till Mangalore, I said no problem because helping others is a part of my life, thereafter the story started , this Christian nanny was supposed to work in the Christian family and this Gentleman’s daughter who was an Working CA had sponsored this nanny and there were lot of issues including adjustment and other trivial issues, since the nanny was totally illiterate I just handed her over to her relatives in Mangalore airport but after a while I was pondering about this unique unexpected problem, both the party’s narrated their story to me and I felt the sponsor was correct and this nanny was wrong, any way she lost an golden opportunity because nanny’s make a good amount of money in UAE.

Please do not be shocked with the salary of Nanny we call them 'Balanth postheli" or Baintee postheli. Here for Mangalore they charge RS 30000 outside 50k and gulf still more excluding food , accommodation travel expenses visa expenses if any.. And they project themselves that they know all Manglorean traditional cooking and special Ayurvedic Leha which we call " Randho" Sometimes it's not at all safe to take their advice. If the parent or grand parent try to advice or monitor them they will take their anger on the infant. So never leave the baby and the mother under the care of this kind of Nanny .

If you can, please believe it. Because, it's running up to 20,000/- for a maid caring for old parents. None immobile, both are perfect except for age related limitation. Mumbai is not as cheap as Mangalore.

Wake up. Govind mam...!!!! Ongoing rate is Rs.40,000 in Mangalore.. prior bookings only. Otherwise you will not get Nany, like serrao family didn't get heir regular nany. Job includes 24 hour care of baby,, sometimes babies not sleeping whole night.washing clothes of baby and mother,, giving bath, preparing food etc. It's package for 40 days. Some nanys get very close to family. And lookafter very well and they get extra gifts, recommendations as well. Here what Mrs Vas done newborn is beyond to our senses, she might be a psycho.

This very same lady came to take care of me after my delivery 3.5 years back. She knows nothing about taking care of a new burn baby and a nursing mother. Even my baby had marks on her body and on consulting the paediatrician, he said this is done by someone. I was very watchful. On the pretext of putting the baby to sleep she would pinch her. I caught her red handed and she didn’t repeat it after that. She made me believe that there’s something wrong with my baby because the baby would be crying. Which new born dosnt cry??? And the whole time she would be on the phone. Such people come only for money. New mothers need rest, care, proper guidance which this lady knows nothing about. And after taking so much money they should work accordingly. This is my personal experience. I didn’t recommend her to anyone cause I didn’t want anyone to go through the trauma I went through. I’m glad her real face is exposed !!!!

OMG! I'm shocked to hear what you and your newborn baby went through. I myself have gone through my fair share of bad experiences with nannies hence don't trust anyone with my kids. Anand......mother must have got the baby through cesarean.....it will be very very difficult to take care of the child or sit and carry when they cry for a long. She is responsible mother so she appointed this lady through known person. Some children cry for a long time at nights....to give them oil massage/bath....which just delivered mother cannot do. Mothers are spending sleepless nights so nannys are kept to give them few hours of relaxation during the day. She is responsible mother so she took the child to pediatrician to investigate.....

The things are very surprising. The new born baby and mother relationship is equal in prestigious or poor family. Here mother and prestigious family failed to look after the child before their pride. Though there is a hired person in a house whole family is there and baby is very small, there is no relationship of mother and child . It's no doubt hired lady to be punished for her wrong doings by medical check up. If the lady is village background she will not do such acts.
