Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jun 12: A doctor, who is renowned as ‘doctor of the poor’, Dr Uday Kumar Shetty (Dr U K Shetty), is providing medical consultation at a very low cost for people since 34 years at Katapadi in the district.

Dr Shetty has gone a step ahead and is giving free consultation to poor and helpless people during Covid. The medical service provided by Dr Shetty during both waves of Covid pandemic was lauded by one and all on various social media.

Dr Shetty has completed BAMS medical education. He had started his clinic with Rs 10 per consultation. He gives first priority to the service of people of his locality. His facility Pavithra Clinic in Katapady is a ray of hope for the poor and downtrodden.

In addition to medical profession, Dr Shetty is busy in agriculture and horticulture activities also. During lockdown he has grown various vegetables, fruits and flowers. His selfless medical service and agriculturist life is a model to others.

Dr Shetty says, “I am not doing medical profession for money. I have served the society since 34 years. This has given me immense satisfaction and happiness in life. I am also active in social organizations like JCI and Rotary. I am inspired to serve people by these organizations.”

“I am taking just Rs 30 as consultation fee as poor and downtrodden people of the society should not feel deprived of medical service because of money. During both waves of Covid, when many faced financial hardship, I have provided free consultations also. I am committed to serve the poor in future also,” says Dr Shetty.

The medical services of Dr Uday kumar Shetty in Ayurvedic field rendered at low cost to poor are indeed commendable. The medical services being rendered by Dr Surendra Kamath in Allopathic field to poor at a very low cost of INR 10/- at K M Marg, opp. church, are well known and commendable. God may deploy many dedicated medical and other professionals with social services mission to look after have nots poor brethren in society to be richly rewarded by God.

Nice to know about Dr. Shetty. Our family doctor Dr. Sudhindra Rao in Derebail (Akash Bhavan road) was charging Rs. 10/- per person and now increased to Rs. 20/- including medicine. I salute these doctors who are serving the poor people.

May God bless the Dr. and his family. Here too in our city there are such doctors. For eg. I found a good doctor Dr. Sudhir Nayak at Boloor who was bold enough to treat patients during Covid#1 pandemic while others were afraid to come to their clinics. This Dr. also charges very nominal charge including medicine. He does'nt advise unnecessary tests too. One such doctor is there at Chilimbi too

Dr. UK. Shetty’s service to mankind for over 3 decades will be ever remembered. God bless you , sir. I see some comments above, Doctors in Mangalore should follow him. Yes, ethnically but can’t economically. Doctors also have families and liabilities like any other common man. For about 9 to 12 years at least they toil day in and day out to study medicine exclusively and when it comes doctors fee, some patients are hesitant or feel the consultation fee rs.300 to 500 of a specialist is high, ignoring the fact of present cost of living. This is the irony of current situation of doctors. Once again, God bless you, Doctor.

When many doctors and hospitals are looting not only rich but also poor people taking full advantage of Covid situation, Dr. Shetty's noble deed is highly commendable. A nurse in India tells us the Covid patients are treated worst than animals in the hospital she works. They are just left on their own, doctors don't attend them, they are not given food on time and even for water they have to repeatedly ask for it. While this type of scenario is very common in India these days, we still have doctors like Uday Kumar Shetty. I salute him for his humanitarian work for the needy and downtrodden ones.

The doctor you are referring at Kankanady could be Dr. Alva, who had his his dispensary in front of bus-stop. He was very polite, down to earth and charging very low fee. When you enter is office, he would say namaste with his folded hands. I always used to visit him.
