Mangaluru appears to have tamed spread of Covid infections

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 16: The number of new Covid infections in Mangaluru, which used to be highest during the initial days since the second coronavirus wave erupted, has been coming down of late.

During the month of May, the city accounted for up to 350 new cases per day. On a daily basis, 10 to 25 infected people were found in over 10 wards in the city. During June, the number of Covid infections started coming down. On June 13, the Covid positive cases in the city came down to 80. For the last some days, the cases registered every day numbered around a hundred on an average.

Currently, the city has 1,118 active cases and the positivity rate for the last three days is around seven. There are over 50 cases in Padavu ward, Kadri, and it is in the red zone. In other wards, the cases are less than 50. None of the wards has zero cases. However, in over 25 wards, during the routine testing, not even a single new case is getting registered. Health department officials say that in most of the wards, the number of infected persons per day is within five.

In addition to taking care of the person testing positive, more importance is now being laid on finding his primary contacts. On the basis of the information provided by the infected persons, all those who came in contact with them are being tested without any exception. In case more cases are found in employees from a particular spot, all those working there are to be tested as per directions. A mobile throat swab testing vehicle has been initiated and six teams are functioning. The aim is to test more and more primary contacts.

Commissioner of the city corporation, Akshy Sridhar, says that there are over a thousand active cases in the city that are slowly coming down. He said that the infection can be further reduced by conducting more and more tests. City mayor, Premananda Shetty, said that instructions have been issued to test all people in a residential complex even if one among the residents tests positive.

This is not a wholistic view. Mangalore city corporation has recorded 90 cases on Tuesday. This does not include surrounding areas like bajpe, mulki, kinnigoli, konaje, kaikamba, konaje. If the city is opened, there would be people coming from these areas too. Again on Tuesday, jeppu ward sudenly reported 16 cases in a single day. Daijiworld should have given us a weekly moving average or monthly moving average.
