Mangalore, Sep 4: It was like being transported to God's own country for a day as students of Karavali Group of Colleges decked in traditional attires celebrated Onam with great pomp and splendour on Saturday September 4.

The vibrant celebrations were held at Neermarga Karavali Institute of Technology College here.

Ganesh Rao, chairman, Karavali Group of Colleges, welcomed the gathering and said that the programme is mostly to show the cohesiveness of the students and their unity in diversity.

City police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, presiding over the function, said that Rao has showcased the various cultures of the nation within the premises of his institution. He said that such cultural programmes indicate that there is a feeling of oneness despite diversity in the college which is a reflection of the unity in the nation.

Singh said that the institution had brought Kerala to the city through this depiction of cultural traditions.

The cultural programme consisted of the traditional Onam dance, the ‘pookalam’, Kathakali, ‘Pilikali’ (tiger dance), Maveli (Mahabali), Kalaripayattu, Kerala style ‘Kol Kali’, boat race depiction and so on. Hindu, Muslim, and Christian weddings were staged and cultural dances were performed beautifully. A traditional Kerala-style fashion show appealed to the audience. Traditional Kerela food was served later.

Poonam Singh, Ivan D’Souza, senior vice-president, Congress party,  former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty, Moideen Bava, district president, Congress minority committee, Shreekar Prabhu, president, BJP committee, and Lata Mani Rao, director, Karavali Group of Colleges, was also present on the occasion.

Malayalees are true representatives of culture.Because wherever they go,they carry Malayali language, food & culture with them.(Lungi/Mundu too).Onam is not the festival of Hindus. It is the festival of Malayalis. That is the way they get involved and celebrate.I think except Malayalees,no one celebrates his/her festival with so much enthusiasm.Full marks to Kerala & Keralites in this case. Mr.DK's photos are too good.

Firstly, thanks to Mr. Kukkaje for providing such lovely photography on the colorful events taking place in and around Mangalore. Season festivals of India bring back the history, the culture, the music and traditional dances and much more into reality. This is the richness of India that need be preserved at all times. These traditional events bring back the pride and pleasure of the past to the new generation of India so that they can not only relish the joy of the past but also improvise those rituals with better displays for the future. We are always keen to witness these rich events in action and in writing so that we can always share these events to so many of our American friends and make them aware of our treasured history of Mahabharatha.

During our next trip to India we will be happy to meet Mr. Kukkaje and personally cohngratulate him for all the good job thru his talented work of photography
