Washington, Jul 3: According to the reports of Petroleos Mexicanos or Pemex, a state-owned oil company fire broke out on the underground pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico sending bright orange flames in the shape of an eye. This is caused due to a gas leak from the pipeline.
The scene of the fire is termed as ‘eye of fire’ on various social media platforms as it resembles molten lava which exudes during a volcanic eruption. The video of the same is shared by many Mexican journalists and publications on Twitter. Streams of water were sprayed on the flames from the boats. The whole action has already hit a million views.
The fire occurred just near the Pemex oil platform in the Atlantic Ocean. The fire was put off after five hours of grueling operation. The fire first began at the pipeline that connects to the flagship ‘Ku Maloob Zaap’ platform of Pemex company. It is situated near the southern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.
No injuries were reported and oil production went on without any hindrance according to the information given by Pemex. The company has shut 12-inch diameter valves of the pipeline as a precaution. Nitrogen and water were both used to douse the flames.
The flagship project ‘Ku Maloob Zaap’ is the biggest crude oil producer of Pemex. Out of the 1.7 million barrels of oil that is produced by the company on a daily basis, 40% is produced by this platform alone.
