Udupi, Aug 2: Journalists, who are usually busy with press conferences, visits of eminent personalities and other matters that make news, were seen in a different role on Sunday, August 1.

Working journalists of the district got down to the paddy field and planted the saplings on the fallow land near Honnala Kambalagadde Mane of Harady village. This programme was organized by Kedarothana Trust under the limits of Harady gram panchayat under the slogan ‘Fallow land agricultural revolution’.

MLA Raghupati Bhat offered milk to mother earth and inaugurated the programme by planting saplings himself. He was accompanied by Santhosh Shetty, president Bunts’ Association Pune, Prakash Chandra Shetty, management trustee, G M Education Trust, Rajesh Shetty Alevooru, president, Udupi district working journalists’ association and Ajit Aradi, agriculturist and reporter, Vijaya Karnataka Udupi district.

Speaking on the occasion, Ajit Aradi said, “There is no loss from agriculture. However, due to unavoidable reasons, lands are not used for agriculture nowadays. We do not have the system of paying ‘Tiri’ for paddy. So the rate of paddy is less. Only Rs 10 to 15 is paid. This results in financial loss. The price of rice should be at least Rs 50 to 55 per kilo.

“Animal husbandry and agriculture share a close bond. As the animal husbandry reduced at homes, agriculture also disappeared and the land turned barren. So at least two cows have to be reared in every house and agriculture of paddy should start.

“If properly handled, agriculture is a profitable business. However, agriculturists should get support from the government like provided to fishermen. Fertilizer, sowing seeds and mechanization should be available at reasonable rates.”

Local MLA Raghupati Bhat thanked all the organizations who were involved in the act of planting saplings and also the owner of the lands.

President of Harady gram panchayat Prabhakar Shetty, vice president Jayanti Poojary, locals A Balakrishna Shetty, Abu Saheb, chief secretary of Kedarothana Trust Murali Kadekar, treasurer Raghavendra Kini, members Birti Rajesh Shetty, Pratap Hegde Marali, Agriculture and horticulture university Shivamogga and senior zonal officer of zonal agriculture and horticulture research centre Brahmavar Dr Shankar, members of Harady gram panchayat, owners of lands, local agriculturists, eminent leaders of party and workers participated in the programme.
